Hi all, just a quick couple of questions on what a couple of items are on an engine I am having rebuilt... We're not sure what they are. The first thing is a hose that connects in to the bottom of the block and the other end has a screen filter and was just laying in the bottom of the boat. In the photos below, you can see me holding the end in my hand, and the other photo shows where it's connected to the base of the block.

The second item is what is the pump or compressor that is circled in red in the first photo behind the hose I am holding up? It plugs in to the middle channel on the two fuel rails so we're thinking this is part of the fuel or cooling system but wanted to confirm.

Thanks!

Hey Dan, well I can answer your first question... The hose that has the screen filter at one end is the Siphon hose. It is designed to use the natural vacuum effect to suck out any extra water in the bilge instead of always having to use the electric bilge pump.

The hose should be looped over top of the highest point on the engine as to stop it from letting water come back in and it should be long enough to reach the bilge area to allow it to work. Please note the boat needs to be running along at approximately 3000 rpms or more to get enough vacuum to suck out water.

Make sure you check the screen filter occasionally and keep it clean and free of dirt.

Yep... what he said.

The compressor is for your fuel system. Since you have a Di engine... it helps boost the fuel pressure, high enough, to push it into the cyl's, while the engine is running. (Sorry, has nothing to do with cooling)

The cooling system on these boats is very basic. (sort of) There is a small port in the jet nozzle... and the pressure in it while running, forces water into the block. The interior of the block is big... but it could be full of mud. not common on these, but could happen based on previous conversations. The the bulk of the water comes out the exhaust, and some is diverted out the pee-hole. (to tell if water is pumping)

The "Gotcha's" in the system are:

1) The O-rings in the base/between the pump and the engine.
2) The hardline in the pump housing. (Could be rotten if used in salt water)
3) The base gasket. (if it was leaking)

Now... even though the system is basic... it's Achilles heal is the small port in the pump. If you block it off (from junk in the water) you loos cooling. It's not a common issue to loose all cooling water that way... but it can happen.

Thank you very much guys, makes perfect sense for both items. Tony - the motor is on it's way to be worked on late this week, so I guess we'll see what happens in a couple of weeks when I get back from DR. *fingers crossed*

Thanks again guys,
Dan
