Other PWC's we like.

I will agree that polaris had some good things on them.

I will say that many are a total PITA to work on. I remember my 96 SLX was a TOTAL PITA to get the carbs off.

I also couldnt keep from breaking my SL 700 ride plate....ended up shattering all the stringers in that boat.

The domestic iginitions were total crap...they had like 4 updates to try to fix it.

Their fast hulls werent chit to seadoos....although kawis sucked much worse.

I currently have the coolest model they ever made...2000 Pro 785 with the factory triples. The thing just GROWLS!! Its for sale...high price to hopefully get to ride it one more time this year.

I started this thread because of the lively discussion about Polaris PWC's in the 2-stroke section. This was posted in the last part of the thread and I had some questions and observations.

Nick, that's one sweet ski, about the nicest Polaris I've seen, it would really make a statement at the lake and since Doc already has a Polaris let me know also. Or maybe Tony and I could share it, he can have it say Nov. through April, and I'll keep it May through Oct., I think that would be fair. (LOL)

Seriously, SeaDoo's are my greatest love and always will be, but there are other ski's I like also. For instance, if I were in the market for a new ski, not saying I wouldn't get a SeaDoo but I would certainly consider the Kawa STX-15F.

Hey Lou, I think to be fair you need to put in Doc's rebuttal to Nick's comments.

I guess that Tony had the last say in the Shuttlecraft thread :).
I actually thought it was a great on-going thread. Then BAM.

Maybe it's time Doc got his first "thumbs down" .............OK just kidding

We had a Polaris 785 back around 98 or 99 and it was a blast. A lot smaller than some of the newer skis and it would run with most other "bigger" skis.

From the ShuttleCraft thread.......

OOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!

YES. That was the ski that said..... "Hey seadoo..... here's my @$$$.... kiss it !!!" (LOL)

OK... that took the 800 runabout class in a totally new direction. I think they were getting 160 HP out of that "800" class engine. (CRAZY)

I had a VERY clean Pro 1200 come up for sale close to me... and I almost got it. BUT... I would have had to sell my XP to keep it.

Now.... Minitonka... I mostly agree with what you said. But...

1) The only real fragile thing on the ski's was the "LR" unit. (start/stop/power/regulator) In 99 and 2000, they were bad. BUT... you can still buy one, and they are only $120. When I bought my Genesis... it needed replaced.

2) Yes, there was some ignition issues, on the Domestic... but... they would GIVE you the update. (think seadoo would give you a free part for a +5 year old ski without an extended warranty?)

3) Speaking of parts... Polaris continued to make NEW parts available up till last summer. So... they did parts support for 7 years after they stopped production. Seadoo wont' have a part 10 seconds after the ski is discontinued. Heck... last summer I ordered a new glove box seal for my genesis. $5 and 3 days later... I had it.

4) Not sure what was wrong with your SL... but I think there may have been prior damage. I don't recall any known hull/exterior probs.

5) you have to admit... the 3 cyl domestic engine runs VERY smooth, and makes good power.

6) If you decide to sell the 785... PM ME FIRST !!!!!!!!!

Its for sale....for the low low price of $2500 bux. ;)

Theres a reason though...read the ad.

The thing that was wrong with my SL was the screws kept getting loose. No matter what I did they would all be loose at the end of the ride. Of course jumping it 20' in the air and coming down took a toll. Sheared off all the screws on one side, couple more jumps and she was a goner.

That machine had stator issues...at the time I wasnt so good at skis so it went to the dealer. It took 4 months due to them getting a bad one from the factory, then supposedly Polaris wouldnt credit them so I waited 3 weeks for that mess. $400 BS.

Seadoo def discontinues parts quick, but if you are talking decals they all do. Its funny I used to do cabling at the decal place that made all of polaris decals and went into a store room where they had hood decals back to the 80s stacked up 50+ high.

In the end...they all had their good and bad, but Seadoos have held their value better than everything...well yamaha is right there too.

Gotta agree with you SDB, I thought it was a great thread, it wasn't me (or is it I), that closed it.

OK... on the count of 3....

1...

2...

3...

BAN ! (lol)

Yes they were NUTZ. As Minitonka was saying... they came from the factory with tripple pipes. (Each cyl had it's own tuned pipe) Also... it was a (for a lack of better turms) a RAVE engine. You can see the 3 cables going to each cyl. They were servo driven, and not just exhaust pressure controlled. Oh... and... another cool thing... see the 3 pisser's on it. Each cyl got it's own to watch the cooling. (you can see them between the M and 1 on his numbers)

It was truly a race ready ski, available to the public.

Minne that thing is sick! I personally think polaris skis are ugly, but that looks really nice. Also im glad this thread was revived. I basically got a 95? SLT 750 (i think lol) for free with my 96 speedster. It is in good shape, guy said it just wouldnt start one day at the lake, after setting for awhile. I havnt even looked at it honestly, think i raised the seat to see if the motor was there. I think i will check compression on the thing tomorrow, anyone have experience with these? Im trying to decide weather to fix it, sell it as is, or part it out. I didn't really like towing it home, looks like a giant cheese wedge chasing behind the truck.

Was the RXX with 160 HP by Seadoo, BRP's attempt to copy this ski?
I think the triple pipes and triple tell tale was way cooler than SD's model.
I was told when looking at a used RXX last year that you really needed to know how to "Tune" it correctly.
Was it difficult to tune the Polaris?

I think the big difference was the RXX was strictly made for racing and had a short motor life. The Polaris SLX was a recreational ski that you could race with no modifications.

Lou

To tell you the truth I dont know a ton about it...I got it last spring and it took Impros all damn summer to get the pump and prop back to me...SES syndrome. I dont know what the life expectancy is on the polaris, but the RXX/951 was a ticking time bomb. 25hrs seems to be the going rate on that motor modded up like that. The three I parted out had less than 35hrs on the MPEM.

I really got to put it through its paces at the sortie last year and it felt a bit on the rich side. When I winterized it I found out why...my friend adjusted the choke a little too tight and the butterflies were slightly closed. Im guessing it will be even better this year.

I think this is the best view ;) Dang dock rash...if that wasnt there I think it would already be sold.
