ok, so how involved is it, really?

You should also replace the neoprene seal that seals the pump to the hull and also the o ring on the cone that holds the grease on the end of the impeller. Some people reuse them both, buts its like $20, so why risk it. You can get the impeller tool on ebay for like 10 bucks....or check where you buy your impeller. It is a very easy job and can be done in like an hour to 2 even on your first time. Stick with an OEM wear ring.

I did my wear ring this last summer and found it extremely easy to take out. Make sure you put the pump in the freezer like they say and you won't have to cut the ring out. it works great, i had to put two vise grips on the end of mine and work it back and forth but it pulled out in a couple of minutes. Good luck.

almost done

ok, easy enough to remove the pump, only snag for those contemplating this task, the 4 stainless bolts going thru the reverse gate mount into the pump housing were so corroded inside the aluminum that I needed to take it to a friend with an arbor press to press out the bolts, which have to be replaced. I'll surely use anti-seize during reassembly.. Also found that whoever worked on it previously did a few things wrong, one of the 4 bolts holding the pump to the bulkhead was missing the nut and washers completely, must have vibrated off, and the other 3 nuts were not very tight at all... The bushing on the driveshaft, that connects directly to the impeller, was not installed correctly, allowing water to get at the threads insider the impeller, not a big deal but just another thing done wrong.. Glad I took on the task or I wouldn't have found these errors..
