My oil reservoir cap cracked and is leaking oil. Can anyone advise which part# fits a 2001 Seadoo Challenger 2000 with Mercury engine. Also, is this item difficult to
install? I cannot see where the two wires attach to the engine as they run underneath the oil reservoir tank...do you have to disassemble anything to unattach and reattach these two wires coming out of the top of the cap. I have searched everywhere for directions on how to do this. If It is too complicated, I will take to shop to have them do it...but thought if not to hard, I would give it a go. Thank you for any advice on part # and directions to uninstall and reinstall :) I have attached the diagram of the cap and where it is located....and a photo of a cap, just don't know which part # it is.

I believe that the oil cap is still available from Mercury. So you can get it from a dealer. I changed mine a few years back… just follow the wires back to where they are connected … you might need to remove the oil canister (not sure)… but that should be easy enough, 2-3 bolts.

I need help with the procedure on if I need to remove the reservoire and if so how that is done, do you have to drain out the oil, or just unscrew and take off as is, etc. I don't work on boats, so any details on exactly how to go about this repair is appreciated.

One more detail—
Don’t overtighten the new cap. That is what makes caps crack.

Hi Tim, I didn't receive your instructions beyond don't screw the lid on too tight...did you post further information on how to install this part?

Unscrew the old cap. Screw on the new cap. Trace down the old wires. Unplug the old wires. Plug in the new wires. Secure wires so they can't rub anything. Wipe up any spilled oil. Done.

May sound strange but I had 2 caps crack so I took and smeared a uniformed layer of Permatex Ultra Black all over the outside of the cap to give it added strength and if it did crack again hopefully the rubberized sealant would keep it from leaking and causing a mess or an issue.
