i am starting to just premix and we are having trouble removing the oil pump shaft to one engine so we just want to unplug the oil hose going to the oil pump and clamp it closed. so now the oil pump will just be pumping air no where and i don't really care if it breaks or anything. i think if anything breaks it will just be the plastic shaft in the middle. i was just wondering if anyone knows of a reason why this won't work. thanks a lot guys!!!!

The pump will over heat and seize up with no oil to lubricate it. It might cause havoc if later you decide to remove the pump, or go to injector again. I would just remove the shaft and be safe than look for trouble down the road.

i have to take off the entire cover to remove that shaft. which we cannot get to it without removing a lot of stuff. the shaft will not come out if i only take off the oil pump. i understand that the pump will be useless and i am fine just sticking with mixing so do you think it will just mess up the pump and have no affect on the engine if i just remove the oil line going to the pump??? just seems impossible to take off the entire cover to get the shaft out.

Teflon...

The oil pump shaft is teflon. If you run the pump dry, it will seize and the shaft will shear. The pieces will likely get into your armature and stator. I'd remove the shaft.

If not, take the oil lines that connect to the intake and run them back up to the vent of the tank. Then you'll just be recirculating it...

does anyone know of an easy way to get the oil shaft out! the only way i can tell is remove the cover that has the oil pump on it.

Oil pump.....

You do not have to pull anything off but the pump. Once you pull the pump off, the shaft should slide right out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

Then, put the pump back on. Leave everything else assembled.

I use a mirror to view that hard to see area when checking the syncro on it. Maybe when you remove the two screws and pull the pump, you'll be able to see the shaft with the mirror and know where to grab it.........

On a 787 engine, can you slide the shaft out through the oil pump hole opening? I thought you had to remove the whole cover?

Nope....

No, you don't have to remove the cover. When you remove the oil pump, use a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the small teflon shaft out through the hole.

Premix

Seadoosnipe, One of my projects this winter is to remove the oil pump on my 96 hx. A local watercraft tech said instead of leaveing the oil tank hooked up so the shaft would still get oiled, that I could take the oil hose going in to the pump(and then out) and make a loop so that the oil could somehow continue to recirculate. First makeing sure that the oil filled the entire loop. I understand the idea, but it makes me wonder if this would work. Any views?

.......possible....

Yeah, it's possible. The only thing that would concern me is pressure. Like a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, the line connecting to the top of the oil tank is a vent. When oil is heated, it can omit a vapor. This vapor can vent through the upper line. Also in heating the oil, it will expand. So, if you leave this up to a closed loop oil system, you leave no room for expansion or the possibility of pressure that could seep through the rotary seals and into the rotary chamber.

In short, it's in my opinion and past experience that all oil reservoirs need a vent of some sort.

:agree:
Yes masonf24 you can get the shaft out no worries, just did it!!
The shaft is not held in by anything except the oil pump,i pulled mine out with a pair of the wifes tweezers. "don't drop it in"

this is the piece i am looking at and i know this won't come out of the oil pump hole. i just got on the manual and this piece looks different than what i am suppose to have for my 97. maybe the other engine has a different shaft and i will find out tomorrow. i will let you guys know what i find out. thanks everyone so far!!! and yes this is broken!! (the reason why i am replacing this engine)

Yep that is totally different to the shafts for my oil pumps. I think you have a bit of investigating to do to find out why?
Post some pics of your boat and engines pls!!

Mine is also different to the pic
but I just did mine 2 x bolts holding pump on removed pump away from engine body ( didn't remove oil lines and simply pulled out the white/beige plastic shaft and then screwed the pump back on
have been out 3-4 hrs on boat since and no problems

will try and post pic of the shaft i removed later when get home from work

my boat is covered up but i promise it is the exact same boat at gunsrunner and here are some pics of the engine and oil pump. i am going to try to remove the other oil pump tomorrow to hopefully see that the other one is like yalls. i am confused why i would have a different one and maybe thats why the pieces broke because it is the wrong one. but let me know what you guys think!!!

just letting you guys know that i will for sure be putting the engine in and removing the oil shaft from the other engine on saturday. sorry it taking so long and hopefully i will report back with some GOOD news for once:rofl:

Big Day:ack:
Hope you have lot's of bourbon ready!!!
If you loosen off engine mounts and chock a peice of wood under front of motor, that will make it easier to get cover off if you have to.
hopefully you got the white teflon shaft in the other side.

It is actually probably going to be some coronas! kinda keep some kind of a level head. keep your fingers crossed for the white shaft!!!!!

OF COURSE IT IS THE STUPID OIL SHAFT THAT WON'T COME OUT THROUGH THE OIL SHAFT HOLE. So instead of going through the hard work i bought the oil block off kit so i am just going to remove the oil pump on that engine. i do have another question where can i get the exact grease fitting for my pto drive shaft?? I don't know what size i need and mine is missing. thanks again!!

Oil pump shaft?....

Well, sorry to build your hopes up on pulling it through the casing. But no, the pix you posted is of the oil pump shaft from the newer model 787's. This was first used in 1999.

I hope that is a bit of help for you. Sorry for the bad info, although it was correct for the year model you had.

So it sounds like someone did a complete engine replacement with '99 year engines.
Your a premium member have a look at the manual for the 99 challenger 1800, maybe there is an easier way.

well i already bought the oil pump block off kit so i am going to use that on the engine that is still in the boat and i already removed the shaft from the one that is still out of the boat. Hopefully me and my buddy will get time the same day to work on this thing cause i am tired of the engine just chillin in my computer room. thanks for your help!!!

951

Can you do this to a 951cc reed case motor? If I leave the pump and take out the shaft I dont need any lines going to the crank? I need some help with my oil pump to!
