Hello all,

I was having trouble starting my 95 Xp. I put it on the trailer, and pulled it a little out of the water to check plugs .....

It cranked over, so I turned it off (to return to the water) . appx 1-2 oz of oil (it was darker than premix) came out of the exhaust pipe. The ski was tilted much more than usual on the boat ramp (tail done).

Once back in the water, everything worked fine, plenty of power all day long.

Does oil build up in the exhaust box?

Thoughts?

Peter

FYI: I replaced the wear ring without removing the impeller - What a difference in performance ! (it actually wasn't bad worn)

What you saw was probably a mixture of water and oil from the can since you had it at not typical angle. This is common for 2 strokes. The smoke you see is particals of oil and this coats the inside of the exhaust.

it could be bad crank seals next to the rotory shaft cavity, somtimes they will leak when the unit is not run for a while and will leak oil into the case and get sucked up into the cyl when trying to start and blow into the exhaust and out the back. i see a couple of these a year and somtimes they run fine all season untill they set over the winter and it happens again. next time it wouldn't start pull the spark plugs and put a rag over the plug holes as you turn it over and see if it spit oil on the rag.

Thanks,

I will take a look. I have only had it this summer. It ran fine for 3-4 outings, then high/low rpms at full thottle. I pulled the carbs and replaced the inline fuel filters.

It started just fine at home (almost no choke). When we got the lake the next day it wouldn't start. Tried for a while. Then put on the trailer.

Once it was started, it was great (even recharged the battery quickly).

Would there be any symptoms of the crank seal if that is what it is?

Scot750 is correct I forgot about the seal. Did you have fresh oil on the plug or did it blow oil out of the plug hole when you spin it over? How long does it sit between use? If it is a seal then you can put a cut off valve on the oil line going to the carb side of the engine to close it when she is going to be sitting at home. Just ALWAYS remember to turn it back on for riding use. Put some kind of reminder on her. I hung a weapons arming flag on my dess post to remind me.

If it started out of water but not in it could have a weak cylinder. Not sure if you meant it ran fine once you started out of water then put it back in and it ran fine. Or if it only ran out of water.

Before I launch I always run them for a minute, then drop her in the drink.
