I have a 2002 GTX 4tec 155HP that developed a leak off the back of the motor/driveshaft/bellows area. I have read several posts in regards to this on the internet detailing the problem and what is needed to fix.

I dropped it off at my local Seadoo dealer last week. They went through and verified the leak and are saying that in addition to replacing the bellows/bearing (which I expected...) they also need to replace the entire driveshaft/propshaft at the cost of ~$250 for the shaft. Why would the driveshaft also need to be replaced?

bad splines ?
Rust ?
you don't want that clip popping.

$250 is accurate but pricey, I used an sbt shaft myself at half the cost.

They told you that you needed to replace the PTO ? (I think that ran me $100 by itself)

i'd like to also confirm that they checked the motor mounts closely. (I spent the extra few bux and bought Rhass)

As said above spline , rust but also some shafts do have a rubber coating on them ( I know the 2009 10 gti Se, gtx and I think the rxt ) has rubber coated shafts.
The coating corroborates and breaks into bits thus ending up in the engine, impeller which causes major issues.
Maybe get yourself a shop manual on line and have a look if there was anything of the such used in your ski.

What did the dealer say when you asked them why the drive shaft needs to be replaced? I know after every ocean ride I wash out the drive shaft area with fresh water and after that a real good dose of Sea-Doo lube. I wonder if your leak came from the seals on the drive shaft ... #2 in the picture.

Just got off the phone with the dealer. Nothing wrong with the driveshaft evidently. They say the driveshaft is an updated part and that the updated version is required to be able to work with the new bellows. Sound legit?

Did some research on the old part numbers; google this part number, 272000185. It looks like the dealer's information is accurate. I have two of those skis, so I'll hope mine don't start leaking. The shaft / seal kit is expensive. Have the dealer take a picture of the old/new drive shafts where they fit into the PTO and post it please.

I know when I did my driveshaft & pto I upgraded to the one with the new "hat"

so there is an upgrade, although I honestly don't know exactly why I needed it, just that I was told what to get, I thought it was on the carbon seal side. It was a seperate order from Riva, not part of the driveline order.

if they can't take a pic, definitely ask for the old part.
