Oil in bilge

Okay, steam problem solved, parts were missing from the regulator valve (spacer, clamp)

New problem seems to have cropped up recently...
When I was working on it two weeks ago I noticed about a quart of 2-cycle oil in the bilge. Drained it out, cleaned the bilge (pain in the a**) and replaced the grommets on the bottom of the oil tank (seemed to be leaking)...

I haven't taken the boat out since then, but when putting in the regulator, it looks like ANOTHER quart is down there... this stuff is expensive, how do I get it to stop leaking?? The bottom of the oil tank and the lines coming down from it were again oily, so that may be a primary source of leaking, but it has brand new grommets, what else can I do?

NOT sure if you are exp. the same problem I was.....but if the boat is angled bow up so the water drains easy, the oil was leaking from the top of the oil take like if it was over full. It was dripping out the top, down the side, around the back of the exhaust and into the stern floor on the side of the engine...

Nah, its only got about half a gallon of oil left in the tank (thanks to all the leaking) and it sits bow down as I don't have a trailer jack.

I think I'm going to pull the tank, remove all the rubber fittings, and drill/replace the rubber fittings with through-hull style threaded fittings... A lot of extra work, but will hopefully fix this problem once and for all.

PLease Post

If you do install thru-hull fittings please post pictures and info about where to get them thanks

I will definately do that!

It may take a while though, not much water around here means not much for supplies for boat-building

oil tank

You might want to check the tank real good for cracks. I'm pretty sure SEADOO came out with a revised oil tank because the original ones were cracking.

Another Suggestion

I am having the same problem, some seepage from the oil line gaskets under the oil tank,. also the sending level gasket on the side of the tank (terrible place to put it, dont know why they went away from a top-tank sending unit).

I am seriously considering just removing the whole oil tank and looking for a replacement, maybe an automotive tank made of metal or something. The only requirement is that it fits, and can supply 4 oil lines at the bottom.

How bout one of you try it first and let me know ? ha ha.

I think for now I'm going to stick with the factory plastic tank... Aluminum tanks can rupture at the seams, and honestly I've never had anything but bad luck with aftermarket items like that.

Mine just has two holes in the bottom, because mine only uses half as much oil ;)
I ordered two PERKO parts from here:
http://www.jmsonline.net/THRU-HULL-CONNECTOR-1-2-**.htm
came to about 10 or 12 bucks with shipping.

I'm not sure if it comes with a rubber gasket or not, but if not I'll just buy some sheet rubber and cut one.

One of the holes already has a 1/2" hose on it, so I'll just clamp it in place. The other will need a short piece of 1/2" hose and a reducer to the 3/8" hose...
That and a 13/16 in drill/hole saw, and I'll be through with the sieve they call a "tank"
Hopefully having a fitting clamped to it will strengthen the plastic around the hole, rather than weakening it, but I'll just have to see

Modified Oil Tank

Okay, I modified the oil tank with the thru-hull fittings today, install was a pain, since I couldn't fit my hand into the tank, but it worked out in the end... And no more leaking!!! Yay!

With the second fitting drilled and installed:

Installed in the boat (a reducer was necessary for the left oil line, since it is a 1/2" hose fitting and a 3/8" hose):

Thanks for the pics!!!:hurray:

I am having a leaking problem in my XP, and if it gets to that point, I may use your suggestion.

I am hoping it is coming from a broken line under the engine...

Nice writeup with pictures. :hurray:That is a good way to resolve the problem. You might be able to get a small adapter so as not to have to reduce the oil line connector.

I'm told there is a 3/8" fitting that can be had from home depot or from an RV supply store made for adding a drain to a gray water tank... but I couldn't find it at the depot and didn't mind using a reducer.
