Oil bath lines

Just want to confirm if I have a problem or not. There is a large air pocket on both the feed and return lines on the lines that feed the oil bath. About two inches long right at the nipples. Is this normal? It's happening on both engines. I have read that they are gravity fed and don't need to be bled. There is oil in the return line right up to the oil tank.

Another question: I snapped my oil pump bleed screw. I plugged the leak while I wait for a new pump. When I ran the engine (premix) the oil injection lines did fill up when I held the pump open, but they emptied again and now won't fill up, I assume I have an air leak where I plugged the bleed screw hole? The spring had disengaged, so I wound the pump to put tension on the spring and reinstalled the cable. Could I have damaged anything in the pump by turning it the wrong way? This engine was just rebuilt, and I don't want to take any chances. Thanks, Dan.

On the RV hoses... Yes, they are gravity feed, and don't need bled. BUT... you don't want air in the bottom hose. The "Return" or "vent" side will normally have air. just hold up the low side... and give it a few taps. The air will (should) go up to the tank, and the line will be full.

As far as the bleed screw... like you said... it's a new engine, and don't take a chance. Pull the pump, and inspect it properly. Replace it if it's suspect at all. A "band-aid" on the oil pump could cost you an engine.

Thanks. I just can't seem to get those bubbles out, I'll start from scratch tomorrow. I've got a new pump on order, taking no chances.

Got the bubbles out of the rv lines, hooked up the new pump, bled and primed it, and went for a ride. Things seem to be going well, but when I leaned in to make sure there were no leaks/bubbles, I noticed the cases of both motors were very hot compared to the top end. Is this normal?

Take a look at the oil tank vent check valve. Had the same problem and found the vent check valve was defective. Ordered a new one and solved the problem.

Thanks guys. I checked the check valve earlier, it's supposed to allow air into the tank, but not out, correct?
