I'm wondering what type of oil i should use in my 1999 Sportster 1800 twin 717s. I need to drain the tank and refill with new. I dont have a local seadoo dealer around and I'm wondering what other type of oil I can use.. same with the jet pump oil what other type of oil can i use other than seadoo/Bombardier brand? can i buy these at an auto parts store?
Thanks

Yep, the Quicksilver is fine, it really doesn't matter so much what brand you use, the important thing it the certification, API-TC is the correct certification and in a 717 you can use mineral or synthetic blend.

Auto parts stores will have synthetic 75W90 gear lube for use in the jet pump.

Yep they all nailed it. Quicksilver Pwc oil is what I use because I can find it at wal mart. For the pump, any synthetic 75w90 will work. I get Mobil 1 from auto zone.

In order to keep the RAVE valves clean you should be using full synthetic, synthetic blend is O.K. but expect to clean your RAVE valves more often. I have a feeling the oil you are using is TC-W3 because of the green dye, you should switch of API-TC low ash oil.

Best deal is if you live by a Farm & Fleet you can get Mystik Semi-Syn for about $18 a gallon or full syn for $23 a gallon. The oil is made by Citgo and it is a API-TC approved. I bought like 12 gallons this year of Semi-syn they had is on sale last week for $15 a gallon that is dirt cheap. You can order it from Mystick for about $5 more a gallon. Picking your oil matters what you can get close to where you live for the best deal in case your run out and you need the same brand in a pinch.

I did drain my tank to replace the seadoo mineral to switch over to Mystick Semi-Syn. It is purple in color. Since I did that I changed the oil lines and filters since they were stained blue and you could barley see the oil in the lines.

Why is this oil bad? I forget the oil I used but I got it from west marine. I know that it's not a synthetic though. The oil I have is green which seems odd.

The short answer is... TC-w3 oils can't support the HP levels, the high RPM's, or protect the rotary valve gears in your 800 engine. It's simply the wrong kind of oil.

The color is irrelevant. It's just a die that the manufacture puts in.

I thought the 1999 Sportster had twin 787's not 717's??? And is best used with FULL synthetic cause of the Raves.

NEVER MIND! I just read the specs and it is 717's. Having said that what is the best oil choice for the 717 and best for 787?

Not to hijack the thread but what about a 03 XP w/a 951cc? Whats the best oils for it? I think I read on here something about b/c its a 951cc its Full Synthetic w/API-TC approval. Is that the case?

Yep, anything with RAVE valves, use full synthetic, API-TC.

Lou
so.. let me get this straight... you should use full synthetic, api-tc oil ?
