Just got this ski a few weeks ago at a pretty good deal. Trying to get it ready for the spring. Not too much is known about it.
The know:
1997 SPX
Hull looks excellent except for some sun fading.
Very solid lookin ski.
No key.
Motor and inside was nasty, VERY NASTY.

Now I have a key.
I soaked down the motor with fogging oil.
Carburators are off and fuel lines have been replaced and the fuel system has been cleaned out.
Cleaned the inside and out and cleaned the motor.
Motor looks good on the outside.
Head has been off at some point.
Has a nice looking bright green gasket at the base of the jugs.

Was going to get a compression reading to see if she was worth trying to start.

Turned motor over a few times to blow out oil and whatever else had accumulated.

Hooked guage up and got:
1st run
Mag: 200
PTO: 165

Though these readings were crazy and tried it again the next day:
Mag: 185
PTO: 160

These still seem to be out there.
Alot of crap sprayed out of the pulse line (carbs still off) while the motor turned over.
It is bark brown, thin oil.
Same stuff that sprayed out of the cylinders.
What about these readings?

Compression

There's a good chance that the fluid that's inside the engine has made it's way on top of the pistons which will give you higher compression.

you most likely have crank seals leaking around the rotary valve cavity and the brown stuff is oil from this leak and it is messing up the compression test.

Your test difference is from the crap you put into it. It's just staying in one cylinder more than the other but it is slowly getting blown out as evidenced by the reduction in pressure on both cylinders.

Blow the rest of it out, see if you can fire it up a little bit then re-test your compression.

What colors are the oils from the tank?

What colors are the oils from the tank?

Oil in the tank is blue.
But, I am draining it out and putting back what I will run as a premix.
It was almost out anyway.

Got the pump block off installed and everything removed.
Cleaning out the tank now.
Then I need to put it back and hookup the lines for the oil bath.
How do you get the residual oil out of the lines?

If you have a suction pump that's about the best way to get the majority out. You won't get all of it so don't get worried when you can't.

What would concern me is the color of the oil that came out as you turned the motor over. Hate to say it but being dark brown....sounds like rust to me.

I'm sure it is.
Who knows how long its been set up and why it was parked to begin with.
It died, broke, owner lost interest......
The decals that was on it expired in '04.
What is coming out is obviously the fogging oil that I put in it. It sure smells like it!
Would like to see if it will run for now without throwing a motor at it, which I am sure will eventually happen..........

I want to get all the old blue oil out as I can.
I run Amsoil interceptor.
I'm sure the oil in there is so old it has built up codensation and is contaminated.

I took apart the carburators and cleaned them.
Crazy thing is running!!
Will try to get some more readings later on.
