I just purchased a 96 challenger. my problem is I took it out and the rpms will go up to 7000 but it will not go over 15mph? It also it will do the same in netral and reverse(go forward). anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks -Adam

welcome aboard!

have you looked at the reverse gate on the back of the pump? when the shifter is in the forward position it should be fully up (vertical). when the shifter is in the reverse position it should be down (horizontal). and in neutral it should be in between.

Wearing ring....

Your wearing ring is shot. You'll have to remove the pump and impeller and replace the ring.

You can look through the bottom of the intake side with a flashlight to see the impeller. Notice the distance between the impeller at the center of its blade to the wall of the wearing ring. If you can slid more than a piece of paper between it, then you've found your problem.

Use the search engine in the tool bar at the top of the page,....keyword "wearing ring".........you should get a return of a host of useful information.

thanks, I have been reading a few threads about the same issues, and all points to the wear-ring. I was not sure if there might be a kingpin or something on the driveshaft that might have broke like in an outboard motor.
it seems people have had this problem with this boat when it sits to long and the wear-ring drys out.

Age....

No....not really. It's mostly by how long it's been there and what you do with the boat. If you ride close to the beach or sandbars on rivers, picking up a lot of sand, the abrasiveness of the grit will eat it away.

But, that's what it's designed to do. The wearing ring is a liner that protects the housing from being destroyed. I think, the design was smart. A part to replace rather than a complete unit.........

thanks guys!! A friend of mine has the same problem with his seadoo wave runner(pwc) and he has been looking into his problem also, he came over today when got out of his car we both said wear-ring at the same time:).
we are ordering new ones today and replacing this weekend. If you guys think of anything to replace at the same time let me know, maybee kill two birds with one stone!
Thanks again -Adam
