Hi, I am new to this forum and am not sure of all the rules but here goes.

I am having a problem with my 1992 GTS. The problem started as an intermittent one but now is pretty steady. I have no spark. The starter works fine and ocassionally the engine will fire after sitting a while.
I have checked
1. replaced the plugs
2. cut off 1/4" of the wire at spark plug cap end.
3.checked the kill & lanard switches for continuity
4.checked Secondary of coil (from between spark plug leads caps removed) and it seems ok (13k ohms).
5.checked MPEM with VOM- all readings within manual specs by +/- 3 ohms, infinite readings all ok

6.Checked resistance of stator generating coil thru red/black and black leads and got 60 ohms.
7.checked charging coil thru yellow & yellow & black leads & got.6 ohms
8. and last I disconnected the red/black lead from the MPEM to the coil and still had no fire.

Does this mean the coil primary side is bad?? is there a way to check this on a 1992 without a special seadoo meter??

No spar

Help! Please. I have also checked compression and it is well within specs and each cylinder is almost the same. Any clues? or should I just replace the coil???? I tried to start it again yesterday and it kicked right over when cold then quit again after a short time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks mobilemal

The first thing you will want to try is to remove the spark plugs boots from the spark plug wires and see how far back the wires have been burnt off. Then trim back just enough to get to good wires...reinstall and see if that helps. The connector inside the boot is threaded so keep this in mind when you reinstall them. Replace the ziptie afterwards. If this doesn't resolve your spark issue let us know and we'll continue from there.

Still no spark

Thanks for the reply. I have done that. The wires were not burned bad but I cut them back 1/4 " and got shiney wire. Still no luck with spark. Mobilemal

you said it fired up for a moment? Pull plug w/ wire attach and see what color spark is, blue=good, orange=weak
May be fuel issue...

Still no spark

Yes new plugs were installed. The problem is intermittent but getting worse. when there is spark it is strong & engine starts right up & runs fine (usually when cold). But then it quits & nothing. I have tried all the tests that I can think of without a seadoo ignition checker. My first post lists all of the things that I Have tried. Thanks for the reply.

Any Ideas

Has anyone got any more ideas or things for me to try?? Does it sound like a new coil is the way to go???

pull the wire from the coil, if she fires, then theres something wrong w/ mpem/cdi
If nuth'n, then chances are its the coil or stator assy. If no spark, then i'd take the time to pull flywheel cover off and look into there, maybe something grounding out or wire pinched,...before throw'n money around...good luck

Red/Black wire removed

Thanks Timmy, I have pulled the Red/black wire from the coil & it would not fire. Since I got normal resistance readings on the generating coil I am led to believe it is the ignition coil. Do you still recommend pulling the cover to see if there is a bad wire. I purchased the ski new and the cover has never been removed. I assume this will take a new gasket? or can the existing on be reused if not broken?? I rebuilt the carbs & fuel pump Last year.

Thanks again Mobilemal

you should be cool, stud. Has an o-ring gasket, if anything, remove it, scrape the calcium if any, and reinstall...

sounds to me like electrical breaking down,, a coil will do that and a stator will as well,,

static testing with an V.O.M. will show fine but actual use they fail..

If you have a doner machine to swap parts from that is a start,, other wise the coil is cheapest and easiest first

Trying to get flywheel off

I am following timmyboy76's advice and have pulled the cover. All wires look OK but the charge coil is reading open. The generating coil is reading the correct resistance. Can a lighting coil cause ignition problems? I thought that was just for charging the battery. I am in the process of trying to pull the flywheel but will have to make a holder to get the flywheel nut off. Is there an eaiser way?

Thanks for the reply. Mobilemal

Pulling Flywheel

Well I got my tool made and the nut off of the flywheel. Tomorrow I will get some long metric bolts that I can use with my puller. Then I can see what it looks like under there. So far everything has been clean & looks like new. Any tips for pulling it??:)

Mobil...use the 3 bolts from the exhaust pipeto manifold, they'll screw into the holes on flywheel. Get urself/rent from autozone, a steering wheel puller, hook jaws on bolts and turn, she'll pop..
Ifmotoris 717/720, I have both igniting and charg'n coil's if needed....

Getting there

:)My Motor is a 587. 1992 GTS

The part numbers are

Generating coil 290 965 400
Lighting Coil 290 965 390
Armature Plate assembly 290 995 103

Thanks for your help, I'll get to it in the morning. Its getting late here in Florida.

Mobilemal:cheers:

With a standard three way slot auto puller, get three 4" mm bolts with heavy
washers. Look for bits of metal. If you see any, chances are the starter bendix
is internally failed and starting to fling bits into stator. It will continue if not fixed.
After the flywheel finally POPS, inspect your woodruff key. I have several of the
587 stuff to help you out if needed.
