Well I just want to say hi, new to the site. I have 2 kawi 650 stand ups and just picked up a 1988 sx? xp? 580 in great condition, less the running part. To start, I found I was getting no spark, and intermittant crank. Now nothing. Good batt, connections etc. Pulled the elec. box apart, kill switch and start switch show good continuity. Now the starter seliniod has good batt power in on the cable. The small elec. plug into the selinoid have 12v on both sides yel/rd, and wh/blk. but the wh/blk side is very dimm w/a test light. The motor will crank if you jump the selinoid. I have 6.5v at the blk/rd wire at the cdi/coil box while cranking. I have been told that these ski are notorious for having bad mpems. Would that cause both problems? All fuses are good. I would hate to shotgun this, could get expensive (mpem, ign. coil, cdi, etc???) Thanks for your help and hope to see you on the water, riding, not broke!!!

welcome to the seadoo forum. I'm originally from your neck of the woods. I lived in Albany and Chatham, N.Y....First you should never use a test light to check electrical components, use a multi meter. Usually the MPEM's go bad due to either jumping the battery with a "jump box" from jumper wires, charging it with the wires attached to the seadoo or using a test light to check components. it could be a problem with the Lanyard switch or the start switch. Check for continuity through the switch. Get me the correct year so I can check the wire diagram.

Hey kustomkarl, nice country out in chatham. How close are you to Ft. Meyers? To answer your question, the ski is an 1992 not 88 with a 580 or 587, I don't know what it is considered. It is the white motor. I am very mechanical so don't be scard to let me have it. I just don't have a manual to work off of. I don't know the skis history, so I don't know how its been jumped/charged, etc. If I become a paying member is there a manual for a 1992 or that chassis in this site archives that I can work off of?

1992 manual

click on the seadoo manuals link on the top of this page and it shows you that it does contain manuals for 1992 skis. Becoming a premium member gives you accss to downloading all manuals for all models as well as lots of other useful info.

Well I downloaded the manual and went thru all the ignition testing. The coil did not test correctly. The manual says that the coils should have 9-15k ohm and an open is bad, mine tested open which=bad. So just for kicks I tasted my wifes coil on her xc700 and it tested open but it runs great. Am I just looking into this to deep? Would a different manufacturer be diff specs on a coil?

It could be a difference of models and brands...I have no Idea what a xc700 is...but my garage fridge is a xc702...it doesn't have ignition coils, just cold beer. I'm about 90 miles from Ft Myers...

I wouldn't recommend swapping coils with another brand machine...The MPEM(Multi Purpose Electronic Module) on the seadoo might not like that and go on vacation.

Wifes coil....

Or, if I swap with my wifes coil, it may take all the juice out of it and she wouldn't want it back......
No, you can't base the test results of another model coil with the test results your needing to get on yours. Like Karl said, most all electrical parts operate in two different ways. In one scenerio, the coil is making contact when the ground is open, then another may get it when your closed. So, there are to many different factors in looking at one type electrical system to another. You'll see different results in coils too, depending on the type ignition. CDI or DC-CDI........so, go by your manual's test procedure. You shouldn't go wrong.

Well to start an xc700 is a polaris snowmobile, so I would figurre you southern boys wouldn't know. I am just going to go by my test results and get a coil/cdi whatever the hell you call the thing the plug wires come out of. Thanks

stuff for yellow engines is real cheap on ebay. most are getting parted out cause nobody wants to buy whole 20 year old seadoos.

Ok I got the manual and went through all the ignition tests. I found the coil to be bad. I replaced the starter relay and the coil. Now the ski fires up and ran for a few min. then I went to restart and I have no spark. What gives?? I went through all the tests again and they all check out. How do you know for sure that the mpem are bad. I performed the test on it and it checked out, but the manual said that it could still be bad.

Here is s test for a mpem...give it a try.
Here is a list of results you should get from testing your mpem. Make sure you have all the wires completely disconnected or damage to your meter can occur.

METER + ...........................METER - ................................Value

RED........................................RED.... ....................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

RED....................................RED/PURPLE.................................< 1 OHM
(ring terminal)......................(female terminal)

RED.......................................BLACK... ...................................> 20K OHM
(ring terminal)......................(ring terminal)

BLACK/RED..............................BLACK............ .........................> 10K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

WHITE/GREY............................BLACK............. ....................... >100K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

TAN/BLACK..............................BLACK.......... ...........................>200K OHM
........................................(ring terminal)

YELLOW/RED............................BLACK.............. .......................> 10K OHM
(female terminal)..................(ring terminal)

I hope this is some help.

Well I'm ready to throw the towel in, I'm at my wits end. I have gone thru every ignition test in the manual 6 times. Everything tests out good according to the manual. What could it possibly be? This ski is to old for the coded tether right? Does the buzzer have anything to do with spark, its missing. Is there any way to bypass the speed control (rev limiter) in the mpem? AAAAAAHHHH

No DESS or MPEM either....

No, you have all the old stuff. You have three switches that have to make up for it to get spark. The kill switch, the tether cord and the start button. So, if one of these swithes isn't operating, this may be why your not getting any fire.........

And yes, there is another here with the 89 model SP, with the same issues. They are dinosaurs, but we can get um goin again, if the modules are good...
