I have a 99 seadoo challenger 1800 I just purchased as a fixer upper about a month ago. Clean the carbs, change the plugs, drain the old gas, and go over whatever I thought needed to be done. Boat runs great at the house.
Take it out on the water to test and make sure everything is good, boat starts fine, everything seems good to go. Start giving it throttle and port side motor shuts off. Fire it back up and try again, few seconds later, shuts off again. Smoke is coming out of the engine bay. Open the hatch and the motor is smoking, ended up burning the motor up (only one cylinder and piston was toast). Fire the starboard motor back up and head towards the dock, motor shuts off. So I get towed back.
Bring the boat home, pull the head off and realize that the cylinder walls were corroded a bit and clogged the water lines which wasn’t allowing the coolant to flow through the head. Burnt the water temp sensor (plastic part) out of the bung. And burnt the water temp sensor wire a little. Starboard motor was fine.
Yank the motor out, slap another in. Hook all the lines up, hook up ground cables to motor/starter. Get the motor ready and crank it over, both motors crank and crank, but no spark on any cylinder. Then realize the bilge pump and navigation lights don’t work anymore. The light on the rocker switches won’t even come on, but the horn, blower fan, and courtesy lights work fine. Check fuses, check ground cables, (I have a parts boat) swap key post, swap buzzer because I wasn’t hearing a beep when I inserted key, swap coils, and check everything else I thought might’ve been an issue, but no luck. Charged battery on 2 amps for a couple hours, took it off and still nothing.
All of this stuff was fine before the port side motor burnt up. Could it have grounded something out? Burned up the MPEM? Battery no good? I have no idea at this point and I’m losing motivation. Also to mention, I swapped the buzzer because I would insert the key and it didn’t beep, I guess the other buzzer I have is bad because it makes a very slight noise, but when I insert the key I can hear 2 faint beeps every couple of times.
