No oil for rotary pump??

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 1997 Challenger, 787. The previous owner disconnected the oil lines and has been mixing gas, 40:1 thankfully. However, both lines are disconnected!! I'm not sure how long it was run like this. I've since hooked the line back up to the rotary valve. All seems well, but runs OK.

Is there anything I should look for or be cautious of, anyway I can check the extent of the damage?

Thanks for the help.

Each engine should have 3 hoses on it. There is a feed to the injection pump.... the "Feed" to the rotary valve gears... and the "Vent" for the gears.

To be honest... if there was no oil going to the gears... it's only a mater of time, until they give up. Even if you put oil on them now... the damage is done. All you can do is run the engine until they give up.

If it's any consolation I had one run dry for about 6 hours before it failed... assuming that was the total useful life, maybe if you ran less you still have some useful life on it?

The bronze gear is first to go on the shaft. it may be easier to fix before it all blows to pieces. You may be able to pull it off without cracking the case if the damage is currently minimal.

Let me ask you this. Were the two lines he disconnected small lines or large lines? If he switched to pre-mix and disconnected the small lines, that's fine, BUT you need to cap the small nipples on the rotary valve cover. Also, if he disconnected the large line that goes to the pump, that too is fine. I just hope he took the pump drive off the crankshaft.

IF he removed the large lines from the bottom of the crankcase, then you could be in for some damage.

But first clarify WHICH lines were removed.

Thanks again guys for your insight. The two bottom lines were disconnected from the tank and tie wrapped upright beside it. The is one large Lin still connected that is connected to the top of the tank and runs to the crank under the carbs So there's no oil in the tank as it would pour out the bottom. Guess i'm screwed?

Where is the line that that feeds to gears?

There is two oil line on the bottom of the tank which both split. The one with the filters ORIGINALLY went to the oil pump. The other line that splits goes to the Rotary valve gear, this is the one that goes under the carbs. The third line that goes to the tank on the top is the vent line from the other side of the rotary valve cavity.

Do the lines that go under the carbs have oil in them and is it capped or plugged? and is there oil in the line coming from the back (exhaust side of the engine) have oil in them?

If so, your good to go.

The lines aren't capped but appear to have oil in them. Maybe I'll get lucky. I'm going to pull the pump and see to be sure. Then I plan to hook the lines up properly, and put a plate instead of the pump.

Thanks again for all the help
