my 95 xp cavitates bad when you first get on it, it sounds like it's missing really bad, but once its going its fine. If you stand toward the front it gets a lot better. My 96 spx, similar ski's, has no problem. I'm new to troubleshooting problems, but we did change out with another 95 xp from the shaft to the impeller and trim and I have the same problem. I noticed that the 96 spx has a different intake grate than the 95 xp, is that a possibility? I originally thought it was the gap at the impeller until we switched it out with the other one. I'm not looking to mod it out, I just want a hole shot out of the gate.

if you have changed the pump, and impeller, it has to be your intake grate.

or a leak in your driveshaft seal, are you taking on any water?

After looking at some other posts, I have to consider the possibility that it is the carrier seal or something at the engine compartment that is allowing air or leaking air into the water inlet. Thats probably not a simple fix.

I did notice it taking on water. I launched my other ski and left the xp strapped down on the trailer, rear plug was in and I had water in the engine compartment. But when we are riding or leave it at the dock it doesn't fill up, but does have more water than I would expect it to have after taking it out of the water. What's involved in changing out the seal?

Did you solve your problem? I have the exact same problem of no hole shot but ok after it gets going and it is taking on alot of water.

Problem not soved yet. I haven't had it in the water this year. I lived with it last year. I bought them used and have had the problem with the xp from the start. It doesn't take much to get it up to plane and then its a screamer. Just trying to find out how to proceed with a possible fix without replacing things that don't need to be replaced. I am kind of looking for a simple explaination of the proceedure to replace the seal up front in the engine compartment.

Mine is the same issue. It is great when it planes, but I love screwing around. Also, I have to drain it after I am done. Plus it makes it difficult for the novice rider. Send me a note if you figure it out.

If you have the carbon seal around the driveshaft and it is taking on water there, tighten the carbon seal a little by loosening the hose clamp on the rear end of the carbon seal, slide the hose forward a little (about 1/8-1/4 inch) then re tighten the hose clamp. this seals water out and air in. If the drive shaft leaks, it will suck air from the hull through the seal under power and cause an air bubble in the pump. (cavitating)

i wanna jump in here with a question,my explore has a tiny mist of spray coming in around the pto shaft when at higher speeds, about 3/4 of the way onto plane,is this the same thing that you are talking of and is the fix what i need.and by sying slide the hose forward ,do you mean towards the engie inside the hull??

Ok, I have the xp where I ride and not where I live, so I can't go out and look (180 miles away). I seen a blown up image of these parts (hose clamp, etc) are they easy access, or do I pull the motor, or somewhere in between?

Easy fix

the clamp you just have to remove the two wing nuts the cover the pto shaft and try that another thing you can do is try some rtv silicone under the rubber boot and see if that helps. Let us know if you need any more help!

You have to remove the pump and driveshaft to get to the seal carrier. If it's bad, you can just replace the 2 seals and the bearing in it.

There is no carbon seal on a 95 XP.

Your problem is most likely due to a worn neoprene seal that sits between the jet pump and the hull of the ski. Mine was actually missing (dealer forgot to install when replacing the impeller) and it did exactly what you described.

Essentially what is happening is that your impeller is spinning and drawing in the water, but it isn't all being pulled through the pump. Water is able to escape due to the lack of tight seal between the pump and hull.

The seal is less than $10 and it takes only about 30 minutes to put on one. Pull the pump, stick the seal in place, and bolt the pump back on.

It made a world of difference on my 95 GTX

The Seadoo dealer told me that the 95 xp didn't have or need a neoprene seal, but gave me that would fit it because thats what it sounded like to them also. So I installed that late last year with no difference in ride. I noticed in the blow up picture of part I didn't see a carbon seal, but there was a carrier seal, I thought you guys meant that, is it the same? Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions on how to fix it, I need them for sure.

You are correct kellymyster, I just double checked the manual and the XP has a pump extension and no need for a seal.

My only other thought would be an issue with the VTS where by the trim was too low at launch and the angle of the propulsion wasn't flat enough to accelerate the boat. Standing on the front of the ski planes it out and changes the angle of propulsion.

Outside of that, the wear ring comes to mind, but I can't see it being that much of an issue.

So I ordered some parts to see if I can solve this problem. Mostly the carrier seal and some of the other seals and bearings around it. We'll see if that works.
