What's up guys and gals,

great site here...and i'm quite glad to be a part of it! I've learned alot in the passed week and i'm trying to prevent getting ripped off by mechanics, not to mention no shop really wants to even touch these machines... but anyways...

I just picked up a 1989 Yamaha Waverunner, and a 1990 Seadoo with a 587 yellow with a loadrite trailer for $400 bucks. ( i know i know dinosaurs!)

Previous owner had both running last season. Said that he did not put the yamaha in the water though because he noticed some water in the engine. Never ran it since.

The seadoo was running and he said he tuned it up and installed a new impellar last season and had it running but said he took it out and it would not run correctly and he had to swim back to shore with it and never looked at it since.

i hauled them home , and checked the fluids on the seadoo all looked good, so i jumped the battery(from a battery charger) and fired her up, and sure enough it kicked over! blew a little smoke then sputtered out, did the same thing a couple times... now she wont kick at all... took the plugs out and the engine turns over with ease, didnt spit any oil or fluid out, but when i put the plugs in it seems to have trouble and wont kick over.... not sure what the next step should be ? I sprayed some lubricant into the spark plug holes and worked it in to lubricate the engine, cleaned out the fuel filter and bowl, and now im stuck. I have spark at the plugs, but its not even getting to that point, the engine just doesnt want to kick with plugs in, looks like the starter is struggling to crank...

I havent done much to the yamaha yet besides sucking about 5 gallons of water out of the Hull and lubricating the engine with some wd40 and turning it over without the plugs in it, it does turn over pretty freely without the plugs... not sure if its the battery not having enough juice or just hydroloc but doesnt want to crank with the plugs in....

I want to get these going for the season ! any help is greatly appreciated!

PS - i have both repair and service manuals that the previous owner gave to me but i still like to speak to people who have had experience with this before...

Sincerly
Nick -

Welcome to the forum.....!

Welcome, it's great to have you here. You should find a lot of info that can help you keep your ski running in great condition.

The reason you have a dinosaur is because Rotax built an engine that just won't die!............

From your description, you may need to use something other than that battery charger. When you say you can spin it over good with plugs out, but not so with them in, seems like you don't have enough cold cranking amps built up to do it.

You can use jumper cables from your car but don't start the car's motor. With the engine off, you'll be sending the needed cold cranking amps at 12 vdc but with the motor running, you'll be over current at 14 vdc from that charging system. So, leave the cars motor off. You don't have an mpem, so at least you don't have that expense to worry about.

Re-post if you continue to have a problem turning the motor over. And don't use your starter for any more than 30 seconds at a time. Give it a break. You can tell if your over heating the starter by feeling the batteries cables. Normally, the ground will get hot if your using the starter to much.

I have got mine at Wal-mart. I got the glass mat kind so that you don't have a wet cell or gel cell battery. DG
