Hello all,

I made the worst purchase in my life last week. I bought a 1997 seadoo xp. The first time I went out it flooded due to a hole in the exhaust. I had that fixed and was out 2 days later. It ran great until the engine blew (30 min into ride). I now need to replace the engine. I am tempted to do it myself to save some cash, since I spent all my money buying this P.O.S. I have little experience with engines (I used to do my own maintaince on my motorcycle) but I feel confident that I can do it. Does anyone have any idea what it will cost...should I just pay someone to do it? any and all comments/suggestions appreciated.

Engine problems....

Well, the first thing you need to know is, what caused the engine to blow?......to do that, the first question I'd ask you is, "what hole on the exhaust did you plug?" Because the exhaust is a tuned pipe, supplied with cooling water in two places. If you disconnect that cooling water, then your putting yourself in danger of serious engine problems.......including terminal!

So, real quick, do a search from the tool bar at the top of this page on "water regulator".........water injection, may also give you some results.

Doing it yourself, anywhere from $850 to $1000, depending on where you get the engine........your a newbie to PWC's.....I'd go with SBT. They are the #1 OEM remanafacturer of PWC engines on the web........great service too!

SBT would be the way to go, look at there installation guide and ask your self if you can do it. Maybe you have some friends that can help?

my girlfriend works with a boat mechanic and he said that he would be happy to help. I plugged a hole in the pipe that was leaking water. It was in one of the welded areas on the pipe just after the header. There are four half dollar pieces that are welded to the pipe. I just welded a patch over the hole. The pipe worked just fine and did not impead the cooling characteristics of the pipe. I have pulled the shop manual off of the "seadootech" website and I feel confident that I can complete the engine swap.

Another question I have is this; I have the 787 now, could I upgrade to the carbourated version of the 951? An extra 20 hp could not hurt.
