I am a new proud owner of a 1995 seadoo speedster everything has been going good until I sucked up some rocks and destroyed my port side impeller luckily boat season is over here in Michigan so I have all winter to work on it anyway welcome to the wonderful world of boating!!! By the way I never owned a boat or jet ski before but I am mechanically inclined and I intend to do all the work myself so I downloaded the shop manual for a 1997 speedster hoping it be compatible and started reading! this site is very helpful and has given me a lot of guidance so I decided to join. I disassembled the pump and ordered the impeller tool on eBay everyone seems to recomend sbc for parts so I will use them.

Welcome aboard,,,

There are a few things our skis/boats really like to be OEM.

Starters, starter solenoids, fuel selector switches and the wear rings are what I can think of off hand.

You are going to need a wear ring. Either buy an OEM or one of the more expensive after markets. Do NOT buy a cheap ring. They simply are not built well, seem to flex and just don't install properly.

I would consider a wear ring made of Delrin b/c Delrin is tough stuff, but I hear they may not fit correctly, or didn't when they were first introduced, it's unclear.

Thus unless I hear differently, I will probably use an OEM wear ring when I do mine, probably this spring.

While I'm not ready to recommend a Delrin wear ring I can tell you my personal experience. I installed an SBT delrin wear ring last spring, it fit well and after one season it still looks almost new, just a few scratches and nicks. I put about 60 hours on that ski this summer. Delrin is the material SeaDoo uses on 4-tecs.

Cant we use a few screws to keep it from rotating it it's a bit lose, how does that work, did you use silicone or was it a tight fit?

My pump is 155mm of course, so the dimensions will be different as a result.

The ring I got was a pretty tight fit, I used the freezer method to install it, I also used the neoprene washer, I haven't noticed it slipping.

Ok thanks im glad you told me that I almost ordered a cheap one on ebay I will hold out and order from sbt. one thing I noticed when I took the pump impeller off I think the pre owner put the wrong pitch on the portside the impeller printing read 13-18 and from what I understand that should be a 14-19 pitch Im also new to boats so just to clarify the portside is the passenger side or left side if at the wheel?

Port is Left.. Port and left both have the letter "T" in them. All things are viewed as if you were sitting in the drivers seat facing forward.

The PO may have done this for a reason, check the other impeller and see if it is the same or not. If they are different, then you will have to try some experimenting to get things right.

Do both engine reach normal max RPM? Do they both (prior to the rock issue) accelerate the same. Specifically, if you floor it, do the engine rev all the way up and you slowly gain speed or do they not accelerate up and you have good performance?

As this post is leaving the MEET AND GREET aspect and heading toward some repair info/advice, I will move it to the 2-STROKE BOATS section.

I will leave a 30-day redirect so the OP can easily find his post...

yes everything seemed to be running good I did a compresion test and the port side was 150 150psi the driver side or starboard side has 145 135psi but she seemed to be running good fast to plane and even power. I just checked the starboard side impeller with a boar flashlight and it seems like the wear ring is trashed so I will be taking that off to check it out. thanks for the help and just to let you know this is the first forum that i ever posted to so if im in the wrong section to discuss repairs i'm sorry might take me a little while to get used to the forum

No issues,,, You WERE in the Meet and Greet section. But this post became more of a repair post so I moved it so that more members would see it and be able to help you..

From the HOME screen you will see many forums. 2-Stroke, 4-Stroke, Meet and Greet,,, ect ect...
If you want to post in the future select the forum that best suits your needs. We can always move it if need be.

Again,, welcome aboard..

Port is the short(er) word as are left and red. Green is a long(er) word, just as right and starboard are. So now you can navigate the harbor at night by bow light color, too!

ok thanks, I forgot to say that my starboard side rpm gauge is shot but they seemed even as far as the sound goes. before the rock issue I didn't notice any bad performance but this is my first boat and to be honest I prob wouldn't know the difference between top and mid performance but I could reach 45 50 mph no prob so I will pull the starboard impeller off this weekend and post the pitch. thanks

Don't know if this means anything, but my 2000 GTX DI pump has two screws that hold the wear ring in place. Looks like it came from the factory that way. I used WSM wear rings on all my stuff. So far I have been pleased.

I am also using SBT`s Delrin wear rings in our Challenger 1800. so far they look very good from viewing from the impeller or steering nozzle side with a light. I`ll know more and report when I pull the pump to service them at the end of the season.

I was using OEM`s with aftermarket solas impellers which have a tighter tolerance and was eating/blowing holes from cav burns in the OEM BRP wear rings.

I also used SBT`s Delrin wear rings in my modified GP1300R...

one thing to remember is the more torque and HP you make (with mods) or a tighter clearance impeller will work on the wear rings much more than a stock engine or stock impeller.

I was starting to see cav burns on the blades of the impeller and the Delrin wear ring in the yamaha, but hook up and overall performance was awesome...

I`ll continue to use the delrins until I see otherwise...

***I used a small bead of white marine silicone at the edge of the delrin wear ring going into the pump housing, then the compression of the neoprene seal and bolt tightening pushed a lot of the little bead out, so there was just enough to hold it just in case... they were a bit loose while the pumps were off, but they are tight and fine currently...
