Just purchased a 2000 RX and the Speedo doesn't work.

Any troubleshooting advice?

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at the paddle wheel for damage, check the connection to it inside the ski and at the dash. Does the gauge light up/turn on when you insert your lanyard?

Paddle wheel looks and spins fine. Checked connection and it looks strong...even took the speedo out and took it apart as far as I could and nothing looked abnormal.

Speedo is analog and no movement even when paddle is spun with lanyard on.

Here is a picture of your system, check all the connections to the speedo and make sure there is no corrosion, also looks like according to the picture that it is just like mine in where the paddle wheel attaches to the rear transom at a converter which turns the pressure into a electrical signal, I have seen these go bad before as well. I am sure somewhere there is a gauge test for it.....however I am not certain as to how to test the gauge, I know that if you spin the paddle wheel you should be able to pick up a signal off of the converter though I do not know which wire.

Connections at Speedo are firm and not corroded (they still have the electrical grease on them) - $250 for a new Speedo - OUCH! ...and speed sensor - $140 clams - double ouch!!!

I'd like to rule that out first b4 I drop that kind of coin.

Thats why stated that you can check the paddle wheel and converter first, when the wheel is spun in the water the pressure is sent to the converter it converts it to an electrical signal, that signal can be measured with a volt meter at the electrical connector near the port side aft of the ski, you could also prob use an ohm setting as well. But I do not know which wires to check with the ohm setting you could spin it and see what it does, someone will help point you in a better direction as far as which wires to check.

put a multi meter on ohm setting and put between 2 of the 3 wires on the speed sensor/converter on the port aft of your ski, you can unplug the connector and put the ohm meter leads on 2 of the 3 and spin the paddle wheel, this should give you a reading if working.......you will have either 2 or 3 wires the third should be water temp.

Thanks...I will check and report back my findings.

Also, I just spoke to the previous owner and he said the speedo would work occasionally at higher speeds....is this another indication that this could be the sending unit/paddle unit in the rear?
