I am looking at a first boat purchase and considering a Speedster 150. Primary use is recreational skiing. I have had a dealer tell me unequivocably that I have to have the 215HP motor if I am using it for skiing. Any opinions on this? It seems the used the few boats near me all have 155's, and obviously the difference (for example) between a clean 2003 150 (155HP) @ $8K and a new 150 (215HP) is enormous ($10K give or take). I have also not been able to find much in the way of power complaints for people skiing behind the 155HP motor, so just wondering if I really need to go bigger.

Any input would be great. Thanks ! :)

.........depends.....?

I guess it depends on who you listen too? What you want to do? How fast you want to go? How many people your going to have in the boat...

I have the 1997 Challenger 14, seats 5 but I usually have my two daughters, wife and myself. The Challenger has the 787cc engine, turning out 110 hp. With me in the boat by myself, with water like glass and on reserve, I can hit about 50 mph........speedo, not GPS.

I go tubing (which there hasn't been but one rider that I havn't thrown in a corner) kneeboarding, slalom sking and wakeboarding........and the 110 hp does me just fine.

So, the question is ........what do you really want? To spend the extra money to make a dealer happy, or to go sking behind a motor that will pull a board? Mind you, it won't have that "humpin" bad as* motor in it, but you'll be a few thousand less in debt and still be able to go out and have fun!

Just looking to do some recreational skiing, def not break any speed records. I'd like to have enough torque to have 3 people (adults) in the boat and pull up a slalom skier. Having dome most of my own skiing some years back, it was/is hard for me to believe that 155 HP wouldn;t be more than enough, esp with a boat that light. But what do I know.

So given all that, would the 155 HP motor likely fir the bill?

Thanks agian.

That may be pushing the limits. but if you could start on your belly if it is wider than the slalom ski you may have a chance. Mine is! I do know how to slalum but I do not think I could start from my belly. A jet boat is a much different beast than a boat that has a prop. I believe that my engine has at least 100 hp but my jet will only produce 32 hp Good luck

2005 SeaDoo Sportster 150 Experience

I have owned a 2005 SeaDoo Sportster 150 (155hp) for 3 months and am still learning about it. So far, I have no problem pulling a 200# skier on 2 ski's or a 3 person tube. The key is not to "floor it" when taking off. Rather it is more effective to accelerate smoothly. So far so good. My next venture is to try to pull a wake boarder.
