I am new to jetskis and just bought a 97 GTX that has issues. I got it for cheap hoping to fix myself. I'm looking for a advice on where to start. Here's the situation. Seller said in 07 he was riding, running fine, and blew a fuse. He couldnt get it to stop blowing fuses so he gave up. He claimed it has 60 something hours on the meter but I havent been able to get power to the gauges yet. It sat out last season. I bought it and had a seadoo shop take a quick look. They pulled the rave valves to look at the pistons. One looked okay, the other scarred and gouges. They pulled the MPEM? cover and the 5amp fuse was blown. They stuck a new fuse in and it blew on insertion. Then they metered something and said the stator was shorted. They recommended a new motor. I then took it to another jetski mechanic to see what he thought. I told him what the dealer said. He checked compression. Bad cylinder was 30 lbs lower (120 lbs?) than one that looked okay thru valves. He pulled a wire harness from somewhere front of the motor and the fuse didnt blow on insertion anymore. I think he unpluged the charging system(stator). Then he tried starting normally. Nothing. Then he shorted across the solenoid? and it turned over but didnt start. He also found a broken fuse in the black box in front of the battery. He ran out of time at that point and I decided to take a whack at it myself as I found out long ago that paying someone to chase electrical problems can break you. He thinks it needs a new top end and a stator/starter/or start switch at a minimum. Where should I start. Any suggestions are appreciated.

that fuse that is blown in the black box by the battery is the mpem fuse...you will not get anything without it. at 30lbs lower the motor does need to be rebuilt. Does it have the 951 in it? I had came across a site that has the stock rebuilt motors for $1400.00 don't know but that may be better then rebuilding the one you have...............hope you got the doo cheap?

I should have added the engine is the 787. I assumed they were all the same. I thought the MPEM fuse was one of the two in the box with the mpem. I think there's a 15 and a 5. I didnt get it cheap enough to justify a new motor. I'm hoping its only a piston. I saw a set of instructions on the SBT? site where they sell the rebuilt motors that shows how to remove the engine. I was going to use that as a guide to get it out and then see if there are bigger issues than the one piston.

5 amp fuse blowing is a common problem. There is a guy on here that will fix whatever is wrong, search "5 amp fuse" in the forums

I can repair the MPEM as long as you have not put a larger fuse in there, PM me for pricing.. as far as a piston.... I would do a complete top end at a minimum... but you will have no power till you get that mpem repaired or replaced.

Thanks to all for the input. "All things custom" - I have had two different shops put fuses in there and I'm sure the guy I bought from has put fuses in there to try to figure out what was going on. I would not be surprised to find out someone put a larger fuse in there at some point, but I dont know for sure. Is there a way to tell? Also, the fuse I am talking about is in the MPEM box. Someone on an earlier reply said the MPEM fuse was in the back by the battery. I want to make sure we are talking about the same fuse.

Okay, thanks. Do I assume at this point the dealer was wrong when he said the stator was the cause of the blowing fuse? I'm sure they metered something out to conclude the stator was the issue. It sounds like I should figure out the blowing fuse issue before looking at the piston.

no usually the battery or jumping the ski blows that circuit.... i can repair it as long as they havent put larger than 15 amp fuse in it.... as most components in the mpem are 15 amps....

if interested i can do the repair... if it works it will cost $140 if it doesent, it will just cost the shipping.
