This is a great site! .... Long story short...I recently came across 2 GSXs with a tandem trailer. One was a 96 with 56 hours on it and the other is a 97 with 49 hours on it. The owner said he has not used these since 2004 and wanted to get rid of them since the lake cabin he had was for sale. After checking the compression and checking for any codes I gave him 3k for everything. I cleaned out the carbs, checked and added 1oz 30wt to the 97 balance shaft oil inspection port, checked the wear rings and impellers, shot foaming oil in the cylinders and turned the enging over by hand distributing the oil etc before getting them into the water. Once I got them into the water they started right up. Ran them for about 10 minutes at no more than 1/2 throttle just getting them loosened up after a long storage period. After that I took a shot at mid to full throttle. There was no hesitation or stumble which is surprising considering the length of time they were in storage.

Now here is my question...The fuel gauge does not work on either one so I was going to use the proceedure on this site to fix them. I cannot manipulate the fuel baffle tube out of either one. I take it the tank needs to come out to do this. How do you get the tank out without taking out the engine???? Any help would greatly appreciated!

I think on yours you have to take the storage basket out and remove the steering assembly to get to it.

Thanks Mr. nswillin! you are correct. I had to pull the steering assembly to get the fuel baffle tube out. Apparently the end cap came off the tube sooooo somewhere in my tank is the end cap, float and magnet. Looks like an engine pull is in order if I can't fish the parts out of the tank. MAN things are crammed in there tighter than Dolly Partons boobs in a wet suit.

Ha! Ha!
Or.....just buy a new baffle and leave the other stuff in the tank, unless you just really wanna pull the engine. I've seen the floats on ebay and other sites for cheap, but I'm not sure if you can just buy the bottom cap.

I'd fish out the parts.

There are several ways to do this.

Remove the filler tube and leave the baffle hole open. Tilt the Doo so that one corner is down, and all the parts collect there. Get the magnets with another magnet, or a pc of metal.

Get a mechanics grabber, and pull the bottom cap from the baffle.

Here is a pic of the grabber:

Yeah, not really alot of fun, but easier than pulling motor.

Thanks!!!

For the assist and info! I do have a mechanics claw as I have another "hobby" my wife says "has gone bad" requiring a rather large selection of tools. I will give this a shot this weekend when I get to the lake.
