Hey everyone my names Nick and im from Erie PA. Well im going to be honest im new into boats. I used to be into sports cars etc but now got the boat itch! Anyway im looking at a 99 seadoo speedster sk. It had both motors replaced. one in 06 and other in 09. Has all recipes from dealer maintenance etc. Its only a fresh water boat. Like i said im VERY new to boats. We have a big bay and plenty of small lakes close by and also lake erie. Some questions i have is what to look for in these boats before buying. Everyone i know has all in/outboard mercs so there not sure either. Also are these any good in 2-3ft waves at all? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to the SeaDoo forum. I'm going to move this thread to the 2-stroke boat forum, I think you'll get more help there.

What price is the '99 Speedster listed at?

Last week I bought my first jet boat - a '95 Speedster twin for $2000 of CraigsList. It looks to be in pretty good condition; the hull, deck, and seats are in excellent condition. The seller was an older, well off guy; had the Speedster in his garage, and looked like he didn't use it much or cared to keep it. He originally wanted $3000. I got him down to $2000 w/o a sea trial. I hope I didn't buy a money pit. The more I research these older jet boats, I'm finding that they seem to need a lot of general maintenance and there's a lot that can go wrong. Anyway, I took it out for the first time yesterday. Both motors started right up, but for the first minute the boat would only putt along at 15-20 MPH, even at full throttle. After about one minute, the thing took off and maxed out at 58 MPH according to the speedometer. The slow take-off problem seemed to subside after that, but it still doesn't take off as fast as it should.

Any thoughts on what might be the problem?

Welcome.

If you are going to be on the big lake... then a bigger boat, will be better. The SK isn't too bad, but expect to get wet in 3' chop. It's a low profile ski boat.

Just like buying any used boat... take it out for a water ride, and make sure it's working properly. Also... if you do a compression test... you are looking for 150 psi cold. If the engine is showing under 135... it's time for a rebuild.
