Replace the grate (jet intake on bottom of boat) if it never has been replace.
Replace the temp sensor (port side)
Replace the exhaust hoses if they never have been replaced.
Replace head gasket o-rings (easy to do with right tools)
Repalce the spark plugs every 100 hours with factory recommended ones only
Get a Place Diverter (google search for it)
Repair the wear ring with JB Weld
Install a second battery just for the radio.
Use full synthetic oil
Don't use gas with ethenol in it
Get a manual, you will be doing all this yourself because no one will work on it plus it's fun and cheaper.
Empty the fuel/water seperator
Replace the fuel filter
Check all of the vacuum hoses

Hi. I just acquired a seadoo challenger 2000. Should I do all this to mine? I do have a problem with it jumping or porposing very bad.

A place diverter is an expensive fix to porposing, but I bet it works better than some of the reports of people installing trim tabs. John, do you have pictures of your install? Does it drop in just below the nozzle?

The other items are all fixes to common issues seen on the Merc powered boats. I would agree that you may be doing most of these, but probably not until you see the symptoms.

For example: You won't be JB welding your wear ring unless your pump has been abused or taken on quite a bit of sand and rocks. You may not replace the temp sensor until your engine won't start once warmed up, or it is eating gas horribly. Just read through the forums and understand the signs of these very common fixes.

On the flipside, there are some good suggestions to keep you from some costly repairs. Replacing the Hydro-surge grate is something I just did this spring. I didn't like the idea of a broken tine causing damage to my pump and impeller. I also put in the second battery when we added in Tower speakers and an amp. If you have the stocker radio and are happy with it, you may be fine with the cranking battery.

Enjoy the boats, but once you get used to them running great, recognize the signs that would indicate common issues.

Have fun!

Thank you sir

Thank you sir, This is my first "jet boat" and so far I still love the launch and ride much better than any outboard or prop drive system. But at the same time I dont want to put to much money into this boat as I dont have much. lol. But I will put in whatever it takes to make it run smoothly & reliable. Im going to change this temp sensor on the port side of the motor as the threads all recommend. Been trying to find a picture of it for my 2000 challenger merc motor but havent been able to yet. I Do have the pn # from other threads so I am going to just go buy one and look for it once I can hold one. I had been having trouble getting mine to start, but I also havent taken it out yet since I found the "steering assist" section and realized what that was. I only gave 4500 for this one and it hasnt been run much at all. 45 hrs when I bought it 2 weeks ago. I am carefully reading all the threads on this motor cause it appears everything else is working fine. Thank you again for your responses and all the info of these threads. I would rather spend my money on my DOO and not paying someone else to fix it. Porposing is a problem, especially at full throttle but it appears that maybe my ride plate needs adjusted- a thread told me that. But thanks again. If you have any other info on these issues I will only take advice from those that own and work on one. It seems that this was the place to get it. Thanks - Vern

Weight in the bow! My X-20 never ran as fast and smooth as it did with my wife and my dad in the bow!

Even though it's a 19' 8" boat, it can be finessed with proper weight distribution. I also noted that I can pull back on the throttle and drop it from 50mph to 45mph and get rid of it. This is the downfall of a jet without trim.

So go slide that Coleman full of ice/drinks to the bow and put the hammer down! (smile)

Ignore the silly fishing banter, but note the weight in the bow on the run down the river. Nice and smooth with my wife and her brother up front.

We're rockin' 50mph on the river with 5 adults and 1 child. The only bounce came when we came up on another boat's wake.

Good luck!
