New Flywheel, now won't start, just backfires...

I replaced my flywheel assembly and starter clutch and tried to fire up my '94 XP and it cranked over fine then after a few moments it let out a loud WHOOSH! out the exhaust. I checked for spark and both cylinders are firing, it's not getting much fuel but if I keep cranking it keeps 'backfiring' or makinging that sound like it's letting all this compressed air out the exhaust.

Before I changed the flywheel it ran great! Then the starter gear on the flywheel slipped back and locked the motor when I shut it off. Replaced the flywheel and such now it turns over fine but won't start (or even try). I used the rope in the spark plug hole to remove/replace the flywheel and torqued it to 100ft/lbs. Rope came out fine and didn't seem to have caused any problems...is this just a timing issue? If so how can I get this thing running before the snow flies!

Be sure the flywheel is the exact one you replaced. I have had modified expansive flywheels not keyed correctly in the past...so it is possible it isn't correct. Just replaced parts shouldn't effect the timing if all parts are correct.

This one is Original Equipment, brand spanking new, should only effect the spark timing and battery charging anyways, and I have good spark on both cylinders :(

I would check the static timing of the stator plate. If you don't have a manual you could sign up as a "premium member", to down load on line and print off the proper procedure to checking the timing.

Compare the new and old flywheels. If the magnets are in DIFFERENT locations, that is the problem. OR the flywheel key was not properly aligned, and the key is not in there...

Blasted, like I'm gonna take the bugger back off! Might have to...They looked Identical aside from one being painted(old one). The shaft was still keyed and it was lined up. Doesn't this almost sound like a valve issue? What would let a large amount of air through the engine all at once? Or build up pressure and then release. I guess if the plug(s) fired on an exhaust stroke it would ignite and expand through the exhaust system...?
