So got my new WSM crankshaft today and when I drop it in the case with counterbalance shaft I am getting a little gear noise when rotating by hand. No noise when rotating crank or CB shaft alone in the case. Is this normal ? I don't feel anything binding. Only reason I am concerned is the vendor I bought it from mentioned to check for lash between the gears when installing new crank. Evidently they must of had issues with past WSM cranks. Comparing to old crank, teeth of both gears appear to mesh about the same. I will call vendor in the morning to get his thoughts

As long as the two gears aren't binding(lack of lash) or there's a lot of slop (too much lash) you should be okay. I still suggest calling vendor and ask him how he wants you to measure lash. The reason is, it's his parts and his warranty.

Expect some noise from straight cut gears, that's the nature of the beast. This is why many gear boxes use helical cut gears.

I recently talked to one of the larger engine rebuilders awhile ago about this, and he warned me to check the lash because if it is too tight it can tear up the gears. I thought he said there was a procedure in the service manual, but I could not find it.

If you talk to your supplier, find out what the lash limits are, and please post. I am about 3 weeks behind you with a rebuild of a DI

I haven't seen a procedure for this either but I am no 951 expert. I do know that there is no way to adjust it on these so if it were off I am not sure what you would do about it.
I always suggest cranks direct from SeaDoo.
