I am going to be getting a new battery for my 1996 Seadoo Challenger 14.5ft 787 single engine. I am trying to figure out which would be better to get, a 24MS(marine starting battery) or a 27M(marine deep cycle). Please let me know your thoughts.

Those are both plenty of battery to start the motor. The big variable would be how much power you use when the boat is not running. That's where the deep cycles are great you can run them down and recharge them more than you can a starting battery. Can the boat hold a size 27?

Forget what I said about being able to discharge a deep cycle - I was thinking about a 2-battery setup where you can run electronics off one and have the other to start your motor to get home. Obviously being able to discharge a battery does you no good if you only have one battery. I'd get the highest A-hr rating that provides enough starting current.

Hey Nate, good to see you around! Any 24 series marine application has plenty of reserve amps for that boat. I install Deka DP-24 series dual purpose, little more money than a dedicated starting battery but I have plenty of them out there well beyond 5 seasons and going strong.

I have a Challenger in for service that has one I installed in '07 and it load tested just fine yesterday, I think the one in my boat was installed in '09 and it's still going strong.

also thanks nckb. I think currently it has a 27m but I have to check for sure. it does start a little hard sometimes.

Get the Deka from Baltimore, that's darn close to wholesale cost for that one.

I haven't had any of my boats out yet, to busy working on everyone else's like usual this is the busiest spring we've had in easily the last 15 years. With half price fuel there's a renewed interest in boating and I'm splashing some of the big boats that haven't seen the water in several years.

We did get some beater ski's out and ride the ice out when everything thawed, that's always fun :)

happy to help. I've been looking at batteries myself - have a two battery setup in an outboard and both need replacing this year. They are both size 27 which is overkill (and more expensive) so I will probably go with a single 24.

I will probably be getting one in the next few days. the only reason I was looking at the farm and fleet ones is that I have a $100 gift card for there.

does that look like the correct battery to get from Baltimore? 550 cca. its like $30 shipping too.

It is but call around the local marina's I think you'll do better without paying the shipping. I wish you were closer, I have some boat owners that just insist on new battery's every two seasons and I have a two year old take out I could give you for the core value that load tested 100%.

yeah I might have to call around to see who carried them. does the cca really matter that much? its seems like batteries vary a lot in that area.

Not for your application, a 275 amp garden tractor battery will crank it over like a bolt of lightening provided the cables haven't developed a bunch of corrosion or resistance in them.

I picked a Deka up last night at a local dealer. the battery that was in the boat before was a 24DC so I think it might not have been the correct one
