hello ladies and gents. my name is jay and im in baton rouge, louisiana.

i will be picking up a '96 or '97 speedster in a few days. the boat is a little ruff, but i feel confident that it is a good base. the upholstery is shot, and the top half of the boat has that chalky look due to being in the sun for a while. both motos run. one, according to the owner is strong, and the other supposedly has low compression. im not sure on the year. the owner says it is a '97, but the only number i could find on the boat is on the sticker inside the engine bay on the fire wall. it says '96, but isn't an official plate like i am used to on cars or bikes.

i am not new to DIY projects, but i am to boats. i have plenty of time with bikes, quads, cars, and a little with kawasaki stand up ski's.

the boat is owned by a guy that just wants it out of his barn. it is cheap..... i mean CHEAP! the entire boat is cheaper than what it would cost to replace one of the engines...... with the trailer. both are in solid shape.

everything seems to be in working order as far as the controls, and drive lines. the hull is in great shape.... just needs a fresh clear coat and seats.

what do i need to know? .....compression test it first, i figured that out already, as well as jumping it with the car off!

what is the general cost of rebuilding an engine? top end and complete? im looking for parts only. i will be doing the work. my friend he told me about it said he hear both engines run about a month ago, and it was in the water a few months before, so it shouldn't have been sitting that long. im going to clean the carbs and check/charge the batteries. repalce the plugs, and put a bit of tranny fluid in the weak cylinders, and ring re-sealer in the oil. clear the tank and fuel lines, and replace the filters. what should i see in refrence to the impellers and shafts? obviously chips, or damage to the blades, but as far as shaft play...?

i will get the vin when i pick it up..... it was backed into the barn and there was not enough light to see it.

let me know what you think..... thanks!

Nice boat! I believe that you may do ok as far as the investment goes as long as you did not pay more than $ 1500.00 with a bad engine. One good thing is thst you have 2 engines as in my opinion the single engine boats do not have a big enough pump for minor inperfections. because you have 2 pumps you should experiance alot less cavitation problems. One of the first things you need to do is replace the defective gray fuel lines as that may be the reason you have a bad engine. [ unless they have allready been replaced.] The gray fuel lines clog up the internal filters and cause it to run lean. I would think that because you have 2 engines the other owner may not have noticed a lean mixture soon enough and it may have took a toll on the bad engine. As you should know the air fuel mixture needs to be close or you will end up with low compression at the least. there is alot more that you may need to look into and I will let others add to what I have said so far. good luck Robin

im not sure that the motor is actually bad yet. it may just need a top end. i hope to pick it up tomorrow, so i can get to work..... btw, $1500 is more than twice what im getting it for.

....that was my though. i ended up getting it cheaper than i thought. both motors had compression, but i haven't put a guage on them yet. one started with year old gas, and the other probably would have if we spent as much time on it as we did the other. the boat is actually pretty clean....structurally. it needs a good was. the engine bay is also really clean.

it will need to be serviced, some batteries, and a forward reverse cable(s) to be water worthy. i will get some pre and post cleaning pics by thursday.
