So Tuesday I convinced my wife that the family needed a new boat. We own a 2003 SeaDoo Utopia 205 and absolutely love it, but we only use it 4 to 5 weeks a year and I was worried that it might break down during the little time we had during our summers in Maine. Anyways, I ended up buying a new 2012 SP from J&M Camper in Augusta, ME for $41,995 including tax. I picked up the boat and put it in the water and drove it for about 5 minutes and the High Exhaust Temperature warning flashed, followed very shortly by the Limp Home Mode warning and the left engine was limited to 4000 RPM. Truth is our dock is in about 2 feet of water and I assumed I sucked up something because the new motor somehow was more "suck in" than my Utopia. That night I didn't sleep 'cuz I assumed I just ruined a new $40,000 boat and was ruining the families fun. Next day I took the boat out and inspected the intakes. I found no blockage and no damage. I was relieved, but I still had a mystery so I opened the engine hood and found a water circulation hose was disconnected. I reconnected the hose, and drove the boat 5 miles to the dealer and asked the mechanic if what I had experienced yesterday would be logical given the hose disconnect. He assured me that was all logical, apologized, and then helped me inspect everything else. I drove the boat home, put it in the water, drove it to my dock and picked up my family, assured them that all was well, and drove off for an intro ride. Within 2 minutes the boat was in Limp Home Mode again. I dropped off the kids and headed for the landing to take my boat out of the water, but first I decided to test a few items. I shut it off, turned the battery off. I turned the battery back on and turned the blower on and restarted the engines. It ran perfectly until I realized I had left the blower on and turned it off. As soon as I turned the blower off the motor lost power. I drove the boat to the Marina and called the dealer. They sent a mechanic down immediately and he opened the hood while I drove the boat slowly out of the Marina and said your "resonator" is leaking it probably got damaged when the motor got hot when the hose came off. He took the boat to the shop replaced the part and returned the boat to me within 3 hours. We drove the boat for 5 hours yesterday and today and it is the most awesome machine I have ever owned. My nephew is a suberb wakeboarder and can perform 360s, Flying Squirrels, etc, etc. and we all love the space, technology, storage, and conveniences of this boat. The 210 SP is absolutely awesome and for the skiing, wakeboarding family it is the ultimate boat. The 3 foot restriction is totally not necessary so long as you fully appreciate the nuance of jetboat driving and avoid all bit momentary reverse and never go beyond idle plus I am now using "Dock Mode" and have looked under the boat while it's engaged to say it does not suck up bottom sand at 2 feet when in idle.

The 210 SP rocks!

Are the SP's the same as the challenger, just nicer, and if so what is nicer. Just wondering I'm looking at them, maybe not this year, but I'm interested in picking one up in the future.

Fundamentally no major difference as far as jet boat and size go, but everything about the SP makes wakeboarding and skiing more fun. The two biggest items being the Wake Tower and the iTec Ski-Mode. Ski-Mode is an electronic engine control mode that allows you to select an acceleration and speed and then just push the throttle to full and the boat accelreates and locks onto the speed you selected. For me as the primary driver it was always frustrating because no one could start and pull me with the same level of consistency that I could do for others, but now with Ski-Mode everyone becomes a perfect jet boat driver. I can't begin to say how awesome that is, and of course for wakeboarders the tower is critical. For the non-wakeboarding family a Challenger is definitely an excellent choice!

I've got a new 210 sp and love it. It accommodates the family and allows me to wake board.

I love this boat!! The main difference between the SP and the base Challenger is that the SP always comes with a tower and bimini top as well as snap in carpets and 4 speakers. Those are all options for the Challenger. Additionally, the SP has stereo controls from the Helm, which I don't recall the challenger had. Plus you get Sea Doo Hydro Turf on the swim platform.

What is the top speed on this boat ? How is she on gas? Is she nimble ? Whats the upkeep involve? Thinking about one of these or 210 wake for next season. Thanks Ron

Hi Ron,

Mine tops out around 47 mph, gas usage is highly dependent on how I use it but roughly 5 to 10 gph, since it's a jet boat it's about as nimble as they come, and the upkeep is like owning a turbo charged car, you need to keep up frequent oil changes and inspections (or so I've been told - ask me again about upkeep in a couple years).

Anyways, I still love mine and can't wait to get back to Maine next week!
