Need more horsepower

What can be done to a 717 to increase horsepower ? Or would an engine swap be better and what engine should be used it’s for a 1997 sportster

Nothing... if you want it to be reliable. That little engine is already making more power per liter than most super cars. As far as a swap... put whatever you want in it. There isn't a "Bolt in" engine if that's what you are asking.

ultimately yes but when I bought it I was in educated on seadoo boats and deal was to good to pass up ...
