Hello again, I posted a couple days ago about this same problem. Here is a link to that thread http://seadooforum.com/showthread.php?t=7267

I am losing power at half throttle and higher, the engine slows down and then dies out. It will sit and idle all day long if you let it though. Yesterday I replaced the fuel lines, cleaned out the fuel filter and the filter in the carb. I also cleaned out the fuel selector valve with some carb cleaner. I was very disappointed when I took out today and still had the problem. It sounds to me like some sort of fuel problem, but I am very new to these things so let me know what you think.

By the way, this is a 1995 XP, but it has a 587 with a single carb in it, not the 717.

also, what year and model did the 587 come out, and did this carb come with it..also, if you rebuilt it/split casing, did you set RV timing to 130*opening

I really couldn't tell you if the electrical has been changed. The engine was already in there when I bought it. They told me it had a rebuilt engine in it, and I assumed that it was another 717. I've only had it for a couple weeks and I just discovered yesterday while I was working on it that it was a 587. How can I identify the correct electronics?

darn....start by opening up all electric boxes, get #'s off componants, then cross reference to 717/587 parts...mpem/ecm, coil, rectifier, maore than likely, you have the 587 stator assy.., what color is the motor...

alright, pm'ing me with type carb you got...heres multiple carb settings........
1989 SP 587 270500054 N/A BN-38 (RB) MAIN-85 PILOT-N/A ?(n/s) 11.5 - 12.5psi LOW- 1-3/4 HIGH- N/A -
1990 SP 587 270500054 N/A BN-38 (RB) MAIN-100 PILOT-N/A ?(n/s) 11.5 - 12.5psi LOW- 1-3/4 HIGH- N/A -
1990 GT 587 270500073 270500072 BN-38 (RB) MAIN-110 PILOT-N/A ?(n/s) 11.5 - 12.5psi LOW- 1-1/2 HIGH- N/A
...just because the internal filter is cleaned, stud...doesnt mean the carb is goin to work sufficiently...need to get rebuild kit. Done all the right procedures so far...While you have the carb opened, take a gander at the jet sizes,....

Hey, thanks for your help. Not sure what all those numbers and stuff means, but I will get a rebuild kit. Not sure what kit I need to buy since this isn't the original motor, and I'm not sure where to buy it. Could you help me with that? I'm not going to have time to get to work on this today, but thanks again for your help.

Do the jets have the size on them? I'll let you know what they are when I get the carb taken apart. Are you thinking they may be the wrong ones?

hey...not wrong ones, but the jets are labeled, and then can cross reference as to what ski the motor/carb came from, and then can set the LSA setting...the literature I posted is...type of carb w/oem #, main=main jet, pilot=not available/dont have one, ?=needle and seat, 11.5-12.5psi=pop-off pressure for needle and seat, LOW=low speed adjustment, High=not available....you have the BN-38(RB) carb, mention that on the purchase of rebuild kit...ok, hope that helps....

Thanks, that helps a lot.

Is there a website I can order the rebuild kit from? I live an hour away from the nearest seadoo dealer, and I don't have the time to drive up there.

seadoosource.com for the base rebuild kit.....maybe he can walk you through the needle/seat and jet combos.

it is probably the orig 720 carbs. to change carb type usually requires changing throttle and choke cables. go on ebay and do a search for seadoo carb* in personal watercraft parts. you will get a good look at the different types of carbs for diff years and engine sizes. pay particular attention to mounting bolts on bottom and top of carbs. the cdi box is probably the 720 one also. which has a label on it not to use with 580 engine. it provides too much advance and can cook piston tops. check the compression first off, then go from there. they might have retarded the timing to compensate for wrong ign box and overdone it. i put a 580 in my 97 GTI-heavy ski. ran just fine-until i blew the rotary valve 2 minutes later, but that is another story. i used the orig single carb from the ski and orig ignition. i since put the 720 back in, so i don't know how it would have held up.

ok i just reread your orig post. single carb? then it in not the origional one. first, lets be sure what you have. why do you think it is a 580? does the little ID plate say so? sometimes the bolts break in front cover and people use whichever cover they have around. they interchange. look at the top of the head. do you see a ring of small allen head bolts around the perimiter? or a pattern of 10 11mm bolts in 2 circles of 6 around the 2 pistons? once again do an eBay search for seadoo 720 and seadoo 580 and get a good look at the tops of the motors to see the difference. but, it really doesn't matter. 580 650 720. do compression check, check ignition timing, check rotary valve timing. if all 3 are ok, ski should run ok.

It is a 580 for sure. Thank you for all the help, but I think I'm going to take it in to be repaired. I'm not an expert at this, and I just don't have enough free time to work on it.

Thanks again to all of you. You've been great!
