Boat was running good on the trailer the other day, that same day I was having trouble starting the boat once I got it to the lake. Finally, I got it started then would stalled once I got on plane, it started back up and did the same thing. brought it home battery tested good. I cleaned the post and key but still have the same issue so I went to the dealer and purchased a new lanyard. My issue was a little better (stalled 25% less) but had the same stalling issue. I had my mechanic change the post out now all it does is beeps 8 times with or without the lanyard. Does not turn over the motor or anything just 8 beeps. Any suggestions? I know 8 beeps says bad mpem but I hoping not.

I'll take a shot on this....the running issues on the water point to carburation issues....runs OK on trailer, craps out on the water....typical scenario.

As far as the MPEM.....so, a new DESS post, an old MPEM, a new key (was it programmed into the mpem)?.....NOT SAYING THIS IS THE PROBLEM, but I'd take it back to the dealer and have the mpem memory erased (regarding the DESS key(s) and re-program your old key (and the new key to the existing MPEM). Really sounds like the mpem is confused about the keying issue (new DESS post may or may not factor in???). Worth a try before I'd splurge on a replacement mpem....

If it turned over and started with the old DESS post, and does nothing with the new post, I'd plug your old post back in and see if it starts. Very possibly the new post isn't good.

Thanks for the advise guys! Its a 1997 Challenger 1800 , when it stalls it kills both motors. When I had the old post it would start intermittently. But I will bring it in a see if they can program my new key again.
