Everyone,

A local 1999 speedster has popped up for sale for a "decent" price. It's about 6200 USD. Seats look good. It sounds like it's running fine. I'm gonna take a look at it tomorrow. What do I need to check?

I have 0 experience with the older 2 stroke boats. So please everyone who has some advice chime in. I know the 155hp and 215hp in the new ones well.

I wanted to upload the video he sent me of it on the lake today. But it sounds like a couple two strokes at full bore. Nothing special.

Thanks Everyone,

J Camaro

If i am not mistaken, the 99 was called the speedster SK which only had twin 720 motors. So either there were modifications done, the boat is a 98 (which is red, not yellow), or the seller is pulling the wool over your eyes. maybe someone else can verify this.

the big things to look for is compression, spark, and hull damage which is expensive to repair. Everything else can be fixed relatively economically. If the boat has proper thrust then there should not be any cavitation issues and the final drive unit should be operating as it should. All of these things should be looked at carefully before going to the lake for the weekend. Nothing worse then putting the boat in the water and something goes wrong in the middle of the lake. Whether you tackle it(there are lots of helpful places to learn on this site) or have a shop go over it, i recommend you learn the boat so when something come up you can possibly fix it yourself so it does not ruin your summer. Shops get busy and you may lose out on weekends if they cannot get to it.

All great info. Thanks for your response.

I've very familiar with both the sportster 155 and challenger 215HP but both were newer. I've done complete jet drives on both...my own servicing each year etc. So I'm fairly handy. Completely understand the comment on cavitation.

My understanding is that 1999 was offered as both an SK (with dual 720's with a mid range setup for skiing) and as the regular with dual 787's with a bit more top end. Either do 50-55mph so that's fast enough for this guy.

I understand the RAVE valves are bit of an issue. But the engines themselves are not that complicated.
