I took my brothers kids out today and after 1 hour of tubing the cooling system cloged up and the after market exhaust system hoses melted and came apart. this is one time I am glad that I use the very exspesive oil to help the engine to make it threw these hard times. I checked the water line coming from the pump and there was water flow going into the engine but none leaving the engine. [It seems to be 100 percent blockage] I reversed the lines to back flush the engine but when I hooked it back up correctly there was still no water flow. So I took a chance and hooked up the water lines in reverse[ back flush ] and I was able to make it back to the other side of the lake. I have a temp guage on my boat but with the water runing backwards I do not think that it would have a correct reading as temp senser is located on the water outlet leaving the head of the engine. I am hopeing that maybe that when I ran the engine in reverse circulation that what ever was cloging the engine went back out and left the system. when I got home I hooked the water hose to the engine inlet and it seem to be flowing threw the engine. I can only hope that when I go back tomorrow that I will not have the problem again. Any advice will be apreciated. Thanks Robin

Wow, you applied a MUCH more clever solution that most folks would have in a similar overheat situation!

Must have been some clog to induce that kind of water restriction. I do hope you got it out if it was a single item. But if it is something more insidious like plant matter or build up of sand, mud, etc.....then I might be worried enough to pull the head apart and look around.

95 sportster. 650 engine? i am running a 650 exhaust on my 720 speedster. it doesn't have a problem with the water running the wrong way. 580 and 720, the water temp is in same place, and the water hits the head right there. if you can put your hand on the head and the exhaust while running, you are ok. i would splurge on a used $25 buck exhaust from ebay, fix the hole and change it. bgut you are talking about this weekend and next...ok, you don't have the hose on the front of head to feed the exhaust like a 720. you are using the 2 hoses on front of exhaust as water exit. put it in the water so it is getting water from pump. remove the 2 front hoses and see if and how much water comes out the 2 front hoses. if none, and exh is getting warm, you may need a t-fitting on inlet and feed water in both. aqnd use flush fitting on rear of head for exit.

Robin, on your seadoo I believe you have a Water Flow Regulator valve. Check to be sure it is working properly too. The WFRV disperses the water based on the cooling needed. If you ran it in reverse it should still do the trick to cool the engine and remove any blockage. It works kinda like water running UP a creek where silt normally would collect, would now be flushed out because of change of direction. Just give it a whirl tomorrow and see what happens. That was a smart move on your part, and probably saved your engine from heat seizure.

karl. if he is talking about his 95, it is an upright, old style 650. the WFRV is 787-96 and up.

derek, I can't open up manuals from this computer and couldn't remember how his seadoo was set up... Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you all Kustomkarl, Derek and Jpx. I was very impressed by all of your very quick responses. I am allso greatfull for your help. Tell me what you think about this idea. Tomorrow I am goinging to start it it out as usual and make sure that water is comeing out of the pisser and if not I will reverse the the inlet and out lets and if then the pisser is working and the exhauest and the engine head is cool should I be ok for 2 hours? I know that I am asking for a mircale But I know if one is out there I would think you all would be the ones able to deliver. Please any one with ideas please respond.

You should be ok Robin...if water comes out the "Tell Tail" and the head is cool it sholud be cool running. Just keep an open eye on the system to be safe.

Thanks for all the help. The cooling system was ok today I left it hooked up the correct way. I can only guess that the back flush from one side of the lake to the other side of the lake cleaned out the blockage. But the boat broke down again there was a pulse line going to the fuel pumps that was in a slight bind and I guess that the bind ending up crimping the pulse line to the point that the external fuel pump and 1 of the carb's fuel pump was not geting a pulse. I repaired the problem on the lake but that sure has been some bad luck 2 days in a row but the kids were all impressed and had a lot of fun. I am going to have to go over this boat with a fine tooth comb and find any problems that other mechanics have worked on and see if there work was ok or not. :hurray:
