97 SPX.

Ok so i pulled the gauge today and tested all the wires to make sure they were good.

All wires are good and have continuity.(show no resistance)
I connected the gauge to power and ground and bridged the pink and pink/black and the fuel level stayes but the Oil Light comes on...
(this is with the gauge pulled from the ski... )

I checked the fuel sending unit but testing and i had resistance at the plug...
I started to pull it but couldn't get it out all the way with the steering cables.
i figured if i had resistance it was good.

So question is... Do you think my gague is bad? if so where is the best place to get one???

thanks in advance...

You need to check the baffle out of the ski while tipping it up and down allowing the float to move within the baffle, resistance change change as it moves up and down. Could be that the baffle is good, so your getting resistance. I would check the float inside the baffle and see if it still floats, that would explain no gauge and resistance at the plug.

Does anyone have a write up on removing the baffle...

What all do i need to take out? When i lifted it up... it looked as it it was hitting the steering cables... all the fuel lines -will i need to disconnect them before I can i get it out far enough to test it? Does the baffle have to come all the way out of the ski to test it?

thanks in advance..

Is it baffling you?

Dunno bout a 97 SPX

Do know about a 98 GS

Take out steering cables, (4 bolts, and move it up and right about 4")
Hold it out of the way.

Pull baffle up. Push down on top of tank, about an inch.
Push baffle forward at top, until it goes into steering unit hole.

Push up into hole.

Bottom of baffle can JUST clear the tank, and come out backwards.

2 persons are necessary. Strong ones.

I just had to replace the float in my baffle in a 97 Challenger. The float is basically a porous plastic and eventually absorbs fuel so that it will not float. I popped mine out and put it in a glass of water, and it floated, so I thought something else was wrong. But then I remembered that water is denser than gas, so I dropped it in a glass of gas, and it went straight down to the bottom.

I found a replacement on ebay shipped for $20. Problem is fixed. And the new one is made out of a different material that is not supposed to absorb fuel.

Once you get the baffle out of the tank, snap off the bottom cap, and the float should fall out into your hand. Stick the new one it, snap in that bottom cap, and reverse the hell you went through to get the baffle out in the first place...:reddevil:

thanks guys... sounds like i need to wait until i have another set of hands to help me test the baffle.

Do you guys know if i have to remove all the fuel lines as well during the process?

i found a new gauge.... i will install it and see if that solves the problem...
if not it is the baffle project...

i'll keep you posted...
