I found this part in the belly of a 1996 GTX hiding under the engine. Anybody know what it is?

It looks like the bracket that supports the back of the starter. It should be attached if there is not another one on the starter.
 
I think you nailed it! I already found other duplicate parts in the belly of this machine so I guess the previous owner just got new parts instead of finding the ones that were lost.

Just FYI... If they used a non-OEM starter then the bracket won't fit 99% of the time. Probably why it was not put back. Many people run without them. Just ensure the other 2 bolts are tight and the top one has the backing nut attached.

And it’s one of the top reasons the aftermarket starters fall apart.
