I have a 96 spx and an xp about 2 weeks ago we took them both out for our first time since buying them, well we put them in and they started right up and sat the launch running well the xp (which my uncle was on took off fine the spx which i was on ran fine for a little then when i got about 2-300 yards away from shore it died from my accidently taking out the key then i started going again and both alarms from oil and gas went on after just filling them with both after it dying out and me not being able to get it going again the butt end started to sink it was filling with water really rapid (at this time the water was abou 60 degree's and i had no wet suit) the only thing that saved it from sinking all the way was the flotation device in the front end i ended up not having a rope to tie to my other ski and i couldnt get on my xp with my uncle

About 15 min after my uncle left me to go get rope and me trying to lay flat on the water keeping my breathing slow someone finally came and towed me in (although the whole time this was happening there was a 30+ foot boat that watched this happen)

Thankfully i didn get hypothermia and was ok, so we pulled the ski and it was full to the seat in water

Finally after a story my question is what is wrong with the ski, me and my dad are just getting to working on it, what could have went wrong for it to take on that much water that fast, me and my dad dont know that much so all information helps

We opened it up and the crank shaft? has a boot over it with 2 clamps on it the clamp towards the front seems to be loose and the boot moves could that be it?

You have to first remove all the water from the engine ASAP is you have not done so already there is a good chance your motor is damaged pull the sparks plugs out and crank the motor over the water will shoot out and run the engine when the water is out and lube the cyl when your are all done to keep any moisture from rusting the internals of the engine now the shaft you speek of sounds like were the drive shaft goes through the hull that could very well be the problem the best way to see how water gets in is to see were water gets out u can fill the hull with some water don't go above the carbs or any important things and see were the water leaks out from

The rear plug was in the ski I know for a fact

Once we shot the water out which was done the day of do we then put the plugs in and and start it up to shoot the rest of it out

Also the water intake hose was attached

maybe it was your carbon drive-shaft seal leaking. how much trouble would it be to put it back in the water? If you can tie it to a dock or a tree and start it up and idle it in the water, you should be able to spot it right away

That is our plan to do it but my dad thinks we have to get all the water out of the cylinders, is that true or with the little moisture in it should we start it up and shoot the rest out

My dad thinks that the engine will over heat because there it to much water still even tho it just misting out the heads

if you can rig up a hose emitting a slow to moderate stream of air to go into the spark plug hole and leave it there for a while, it'll dry the water out faster. I'm not sure why it would overheat if you tried to start it... I would however pour some 2-stroke oil into the cylinders to lubricate them in case the oil on the cylinder walls broke down from exposure to water.

you need to get it running right away, letting water sit in an engine for 2 weeks is not good, you may have already ruined the engine. after sinking a ski, you need to get it running and back on the water within a few hours. if rust sets in the bearings, the motor may not last long, you'll get it running for sure, but may only last an hour or 2.

I didn't mean over heat I ment as like if the oil in the casing got messed up from exposure to the water and we pet it idle it would mess up the pistons

you could mix up some oil/gas in a small gas can, and run it off that for a bit. Just stick a hose into the can and run it to your inlet nipple on the carb. That should provide you with some additional lubrication. you can also just pour some oil down into the cylinders through the spark plug hole. You should run it though, as this would help get rid of any additional water in the crank case.
