My 2002 Islandia with 240 EFI smokes at start up!

I realize that a two stroke engine smokes a little at start up. But how do I know if the amount mine smokes is excessive. Also.. what 2 stroke oil do you recommend? I have been using Quicksilver premium plus synthetic blend here recently. My research had shown it was a good product. What do you think?

Mine smokes a little too. I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe running a hair rich.

Yeah thats what I figured...but... it seems to absolutely drink gas. I know that it isn't the most fuel efficient boat out there..but when I'm the lake for only a couple of hours and it can go through a half a tank of gas very quickly. I hardly ever run it a full throttle. Mostly run it around 5000 rpms or less. What should the top speed be? it runs around 32 to 34 mph top end. is that normal? Thanks for your help!

Yikes, yeah you def have a problem. Not sure what the top speed is on that. You should look it up. Obvious diagnosis, if you can’t reach factory top speed then there is an issue. Full tank of gas should last a full day like 6 hours of continuous riding non-stop.

Check vst pressure. Should be 35-37psi. Excess pressure is more fuel used. 19 year old injectors could be leaking. Check tps for adjustment.

Don't waste your money on miracle fuel system cleaners. They don't work and can be damaging. If injectors need service, they will have to be removed.

Jet boats always use more gas than a comparable performance and size prop boat.

Well unfortunately i'm pretty new at this. How do I test pressure the VST. I know what it is and what it does but not sure what equipment is needed to test it. Also do the Injectors need to come out and be cleaned? What repair is needed for them? I just recently changed the plugs. What is your opinion on the condition of the plugs i took out? Looks like its running a little rich to me? Also it doesn't have the multi wire head temp sensor. has the single plug style. Is this style have any issues like I have read about the multi wire sensors? Any help would be so much appreciated! Thanks!

Vst pressure is tested with a fuel injection pressure gauge. Ideally. In a pinch, a tire pressure gauge. Pressure should be 35-37psi.

Spark plugs look like they have been running rich.

Temp sensor- delicate. They have been known to snap in half.

Thanks Tim. Dont have much more season left. I will address these issues in the off season. It runs great...little rough at idle. I do have a 1/4 mile canal ride to main lake. I realize thats a little rough on 2 strokes. I'm just not getting good top end. If the VST does have excess pressure is that something that can be serviced by myself? Maybe a screen is clogged. Also I have called all over Dayton Ohio about trying to see who can clean the injectors with a flow bench and ultrasonic cleaning. Nobody does it around here. any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help!!

Monte

Google "fuel injector service Dayton".

Fuel pressure- if it's too high, points to the regulator on top of the vst. Unfortunately, it is another of those stupid expensive Merc parts. $300+.

If pressure is too low, could be pump or regulator.

What is your max rpm at wot? Do you have smooth throttle transition from idle to wot?

Idle speed zones. We have manatee zones here. Some are miles long.

It runs great really. Very smooth transition from idle to wide open throttle. Max RPM is right at 6000 RPM.
Weird i'm only getting 32 mph. I did suck up a rope at idle and engine stopped one time. i was towed back to ramp and I carefully removed twisted rope from shaft. i didn't notice any damage. Anything else I should check? Could the rope have damage wear ring and I'm losing pump pressure?
If i'm getting max RPM's I doubt its the engine slowing me down? I don't know. I'm going to use Havoc Speed for Injector Service. Is it a tough job to remove injectors. Thanks again for your help Tim!

6000rpm and only 32mph makes the jet system suspect. Mainly the impeller and wear ring. I doubt your rope did significant damage. I resurfaced/repaired my wear ring with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth. If the gap is small, maybe just some resin. My repair lasted 4 years, and cost about $15. The impeller may have some damage to the leading edges. Leading edges should be .010-.015 thick. If the edges are razor sharp, they are very easily damaged with no improvement in performance.

The throttle body with injectors needs to be removed. Not sure of the layout of your boat and engine. I had to kneel on the rear bench and bend over the rear seatback. Carefully read and follow the service book. Order the 3 gaskets prior.

I found out why I've been losing speed. Pump is fine...ware ring is in great shape. I noticed at the sandbar during alot of wind while the boat was rocking is that I have a ton of growth on the hull. Star fish type barnicals. Its like pushing a carpet through the water. My boat stays in the water full time at a lake. I just never would have thought to look there. Spent a couple hours cleaning the hull and now im back up to mid 40's loaded with fuel. I really appreciate your help and also this platform to seek help. With this community we are able to work on these types of boats since there are very few people that work on these power plants anymore. Thank you Tim! I appreciate it. I'm sure this wont be my last problem.

Glad you got your problem solved. Not many people leave their boats in the water all the time, so that was not considered. Would be even worse in sea water.

Sorry for highjacking into this, but someone can help with this engine wire harness coming out from the ecu, i need help re wiring the fuel pump and even do i download the service manual it shows nothing of the wires from the ecu into the wire harness of the engine, please help, again sorry for jumping into this forum.

I too had the same problem since I leave my jet boat in the water for 8 straight months each year (Salt water), but I figured out how to partially solve this problem. Check my post at
