I have a 89 sp 580, I recently had to put it together follwing the SP shop manual, starting from the short block, I got it to fire up ,ran it, though it backfired when reving it up...then I took it in to have it tuned up, found out I had to replace the spider gear in the rotary valve gear, did that... it started up with great hesitation..got it home and could only get it started with the choke fully out with the throttle opened and sometimes had unintended acceleration then die ( syndrome) took it back, mechanic cleaned out fuel control valve (slightly plugged) and never got it started again, checked the fuel lines, the ski is getting fuel, it has a spark, though he thinks it's weak, I have a twin 580 sp ski and we checked that...weak spark too..but fires right up!! so what gives...120 compression in both cylinders..wondering if rotary valve was really aligned up!!

You could remove the spark plug caps and clips and cut off 1/4" off the wires and reinstall the clips and boots with silicone spray. If it is backfireing it might be te rotary valve is out of time. Recheck it to be sure it is in time.

if the rotary valve is ok check the flywheel woodruff key, i have found them patially out of time. if both are ok do a leak down to make sure the seals are ok.

stick a screwdriver in the front hole, and turn it until the front piston is at top dead center. take odd the rot valve cover and see where the valve is. does it look like this?
