Ok a few things are going on. First thing that happened, I was traveling along in my 99 challenger 1800 when the right engine started running at real high RPM's and wouldnt respond when I pulled back on the throttle. Then the overheating beep turned on. Eventually it cooled off and started up. Then when I started moving it was hard for me to get the shifter to go into forward or reverse. I finally started moving and the throttle levers were hard to push forward. I had to push to shifter into the F position with force. Then I noticed that I could give the engine gas without the shifter being on F. Now the the right engine will not start at all. The reverse gaits are screwed up. The shifter cable that is attached to the gate doesnt move when I move the shifter lever. The shifter will not go into reverse i pull back and it bounces back in to the N position.

Is the engine not starting and the shifter problems related? I am thinking about taking it to a mechanic unless it is an easy fix. I really dont want to pay the 70/hour plus parts but I dont want to sit the boat in the driveway.

You guys have been great so far. Thanks for all your help

might try remov'n cable off the reverse gate/s ,and then move f/n/r lever, see if bound up, then same for throttle, or move where throttle cable hoks up on carbs, and move them manually, see if any restrictions in the carb, if not, possible cable then
