Does anyone know if any of the MPEM s are interchangeable between any of the models?

reason I'm asking is that I have a 97 gsi and i noticed the 97 xp looks alot alike the other part I have but not sure if i should chance buying one of the XPs since I can't find a used 97 gsi one

that one wont work, because, the gsi and xp have different motors....717 vs. 787

So does the MPEM solely lie on the size of the motor or the electronics associated with your bike? I don't use the dash controls i just want the thing to start and run.
