MPEM Problem 96 XP

I have a 96 XP and my MPEM has went bad. The part number on it is 278-000-510. I got another MPEM from a "friend" and the part number is 278-000-897. Come to find out this MPEM is for a 96 GSX or GTX and it has one extra gray lead coming out of it. If I intall this and dont hook up the extra gray lead, because there isnt a wire to hook up to, will it work? I dont want to go pay $50 to have my lanyard re-programmed only to find out that the MPEM wont work.. Anyone have any input?

If the MPEM isn't off the same model seadoo it won't work. That gray wire is a pulse wire that could be for a the Tech guage or who knows. There are too many part numbers to remember and changes to keep up with the numbers. If the MPEM isn't off you model and year, chances are, its the wrong one. If it is the wrong one it could waste the MPEM when you power it up.

Grey wire?

The grey wire goes to the info center and appears to be used as a signal wire to the tach. If not a signal wire, it will be a control wire for the rev limiter.

So, although it shouldn't blow the machine to start the motor with, it may cause other problems when it comes to higher rpms.

Not hooked up, it may sense that there are no rpm and limit the skis operation from the MPEM's interpretation of it's responsibilities of what it's used for.

I know if won't blow it up, but I don't know what the final outcome will be.

OK, well it sounds as if I now have an MPEM for a 96 GSX/GTX for sale. IT did come out of a running boat and I need an MPEM for a 96 XP.. Anyone got one for sale or trade?
