I have owned my 1997 speedster for a couple months now and the reservoir was full it's a dark oil and I don't know what type it is ... . I was told to use BRP XPS mineral oil ....definately not what is in the reservior ...should I add to existing ... or drain what's there and start fresh with XPS ... or try and contact the person I bought the boat off of and if it's a decent oil continue using the same .. thanks for your help in advance.

You answered your own question
When I bought my boat it had dark oil in it as well. I was told to not mix. Option was to drain and start fresh or else if previous owner knew.

Mine ended up being the correct oil. Brp synthetic 2 stroke oil formulated for boats and sleds.

When I buy a new 2-stroke toy... I always drain the oil out, and service the oil injection system. (change the filter, and hoses) because all kinds of bad CAN happen when you mix 2-stroke oils.

With that said... the XPS mineral oil was a light brown, that will darken as it gets older. The "New" XPS is red. They will mix. But I would still service it.

Mixing oils is not a good thing in almost every case.

Yes, some oil is not cheap, but getting rid of the oil and starting with new oil is MUCH cheaper than an engine...

Thanks everyone ... found out previous owner was running lucas oil 2 stroke semi synthetic .....I am draining the reservior and changing to the xps mineral oil for the last 3 weeks of the season than will change filters and lines in the winter .

This is why you change everything at once. You can see that the filter was so plugged that the oil pump sucked the filter mesh in. The oil lines were getting random bubbles of air in them from the starved feed line.

Your call.

Exactly....

AND THIS IS WHY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-stroke oils are not like automotive oils. The additives DO NOT always mix. And, in something like the filter... it can gel, and then you have no flow.

If you don't want to do it right... then buy some Lucas. I don't know if it's worth a crap in our engines... but it safer than mixing.

Mine was been run on the brp synthetic oil and I'm going to switch to amsoil does anyone know if they will mix ? Thanks.
