Mineral oil and synthetic oil

I have a 96 GTX that I just purchased. I rebuilt the carbs and changed out the grey hoses. The previous owner ran XPS 2 stroke mineral oil. I want to switch to Quicksilver synthetic (I guess I’m supposed to run synthetic and Quicksilver seems the cheapest). What is the process? The Seadoo is 25 years old and always run on mineral oil.

The quicksilver is now a dual rated oil which is really an oxymoron since the two ratings and additive packages are completely different so I don't recommend it anymore.

If you want a cheaper oil there is Mystic JT4 or the Lucas 2-cycle but only the one pictured below.

Yes, you really should be running full synthetic for the protection and high horsepower that engine makes and to keep the RAVE valves clean.

You can get away with the lucas semi-synthetic but will have to clean the rave valves more often.

You really need to clean your RAVE valves if he ran mineral and if you choose the Seadoo XPS full synthetic you dont have to drain the oil system and change the filter.

If you change brands you have to drain and flush the system and replace the filter.

Finally make sure you change the little 3/32" oil lines from the oil pump to the intake manifold as that is really the only things on the oil system that fail.

Lucas also makes a full synthetic "snowmobile" oil that I use in my jet ski. API-TC and ISO EGD/JASO FD rated. It's a little bit more expensive than the oil that mikidymac recommended, but it is full synthetic.

Synthetic 2-Cycle Snowmobile Oil

There are a couple other 2-stroke oils that Lucas makes but I'd avoid them, as they're TCW3 zero-ash oils and not suitable for these engines.

Looks like a good option and the price isn't bad. Nice find.

That looks like a good option for a great price. I am currently using the Lucas Semi-Synthetic Marine Oil (Previous owner was using), and I would like to switch to something better. Since they are the same manufacturer, can I switch from the semi-synth marine oil to the full synth snowmobile oil and not flush the whole system first?

If it is the Lucas oil that I’m thinking of than it is TC-W3 outboard oil and ideally you should drain the whole system so the motor is getting the correct oil formulation (TC-W3 is not suitable for Rotax engines). If you don’t want to do that I don’t think there would be any adverse reactions with the oil to just topping off the oil with the new oil.

If it was me I would at least call Lucas and confirm since typically TCW-3 and API-TC oils don't play nice together.

I’m going to switch to XPS full synthetic to avoid the whole drain the tank, etc. The stuff is like $50+ a gallon - yikes! But I am figuring a gallon will get me through an entire season. . .
Thanks for all of the helpful replies.
As a note, when I rebuilt the carbs, the small filter was black - nasty. I was thinking from the grey lines, but maybe the mineral oil was a factor?

Been running quicksilver full syn with mixed results. Went to buy more yesterday, and all walmart had was syn blend. Not sure if full syn was discontinued or if I can add syn blend to my premix tank. Thoughts...

From what I have seen the Quicksilver is rated TCW-3 and some API-TC. It is a "dual rated" oil which in all reality can't exist since the additive packages are so different. I would fined something that is actually a true API-TC oil.

I had seen where old gas would create a rubbery type material. I was wondering if it was some additive. I could pull it out of the gas tank with a flexible claw.

It's great oil, at a good price. I definitely recommend it.

IIRC Quicksilver changed their formulation a year or two back. Perhaps there is still old stock of the previous product, but I thought they switched to a new "dual-rated" oil.

I actually found out about the Lucas Snowmobile oil through my BRP dealer, which primarily sells and services ski-doo sleds. They've burned lots of the Lucas stuff in their Rotax E-TEC 2-strokes, and never had any issues. I called and asked about the XPS stuff and they told me to try the Lucas oil.

Sold, found the Lucas snowmobile syn online for 35. Suppose it will be ok to add to premix tank with quicksilver full synthetic for my 787s.
