So I had my boat in for a service over a week ago. After getting new plugs, filters and fluids I had them do a inspection of the engine. The boat is new to me this year.

They discovered the oil level sensor was missing and recommended an exhaust hose be replaced. Unfortunately they didn't have either part and they were a week away from getting in. Until then they told me the boat was operational and as long as I didn't mind the annoying beep that would trigger every 4 mins or so due to the missing sensor and I didn't sit in the engine bay with the hood down I could use it until the parts arrived.

Over the past week I took it out for a few short trips. Typically no more then 15 mins as weather and family weren't interested at times. No issues while running those short periods.

Today I took it out for a longer ride and after 20 minutes of running around 35 mph at 4000-4500 rpm the engine suddenly dropped to idle and would not throttle. I tried turning it off and starting it back up with no benefit. I don't have a temp gauge on the helm but do have a light that is suppose to light up to indicate high temps. It didn't illuminate. So unfortunately I had to idle speed home across the lake.

So I guess my question is, would the oil sensor, after going off every 3-4 mins as I expected finally tell the computer to go into limp mode or is this a whole new problem I have to figure out?

The shop seemed to make it sound like the senor missing was more of an annoyance (beeping warning) then a problem that would ultimately overide the engine into idle.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

if the oil sensor is bad it would put the boat in limp mode as the computer thinks the boat is low on oil.

Limp mode only dumps more oil in so you will smoke a ton and limits the RPM so the boat can only "limp" back home.

Sensor is in the motor mounted oil tank, get a new tank and that issue is solved.

the alarm/beep on the mercury powered units can mean oil or fuel issues.

Ok. Thanks.

The new sensor should be in today or Monday. Hopefully when I put that in it will solve my beeping and limp mode issue. Guess the guys at the shop didn't realize that after too many beep warnings limp mode would kick in.

Cheers
