I would prefer a newer Utopia with the 4-TEC engines, but due to pricing I may be forced to go with an older boat. Are the the older Mercury engines reliable and how do they perform? Any issues with parts or service?

Thank you in advance!

This old thread will help you.

I own a merc powered islandia and so far have had no problems. I knew nothing about boats and in 1 year have learned how to do most basic maintenance. If I had it to do over, I would pay more attention to the jet drive. The powerhead can be inspected by any merc shop. Judging it's health will be relatively easy.

The jet drive's health can be more difficultto diagnose. I would look for signs of rock ingestion and overall condition.

This thread shows some pictures of a trashed out drive. You will want to avoid any boat which looks like this!

I love our boat and wouldn't be scared of one in good condition.
