Merc 240 EFI Tell-tale

Apologies if this has been dealt with before and hello all!

I have recently purchased a 2002 Speedster with the Merc 240 EFI and i was just wondering when i should have a tell-tale. On two occasions while on the river and after idling for a period of time a strong tell tale appeared. Should there be a stream all of the time e.g immediately on start up (similar to outboards) or only when a certain water pressure or temperature is achieved?

You should have flow from the pee hole any time the RPM is above zero. If not, check for blockages.

It's is strange that the tell tail appears occasionally and I don't have any over heating issue, and as you suggest I may have a blockage at some of smaller fittings.

as above... it should flow even at idle. (after 5~10 seconds for the system to fill) With that said... the Merc engines CAN have thermostats installed if they were in cold regions. If you have them... then you will get almost nothing until it's warm. AND... if the lake is cold... they could close again.
