Melt down of coil on 2001 RXDI

I put a new battery in my Seadoo and started it up. It only ran on the pto cylinder. I went in the house for an hour then came back out and tried to start is again but the new battery was dead and the box with the coils was hot. I opened it up and the coil to the mag cyl was hot as heck and black goo was pooled up under it. I have been trying to figure out if it’s a bad coil or something is stuck on powering the coil all the time. I’m not really sure how everything works on this ski.

Do you still have the mag cover off? I wonder if that black goo is your crankshaft seal melting.

When you say coil are you meaning spark plug boot? If so it sounds like you have a melted spark plug boot. The coil or stator is under the magneto cover. What kind of ski?

I had to compose myself before I responded.
No, when I say coil I mean ignition coil. You have a spark plug attached to one end of the spark plug wire and a ignition coil attached to the other end, one per cylinder. A coil and stator are 2 different things. The ski is a 2001 RXDI as in the title of this thread. I mean all that in the nicest possible way.
I do think I know what I did now though. I turned the starter over without attaching the plug wire to the grounding post and think I fried my coil. I was checking for spark on the mag cylinder in which I now believe does not even get spark at idle , but I’m not really sure on that one. That’s why I’m here to learn from others and hopefully help others like me in the future.

I recall buying some used OEM coils in the last year that were fairly cheap. I would be surprised if leaving the boot off the post would melt a coil but perhaps you are right.

A note on DI's and spark at idle. Early years like my 2000 GTX DI fire both cylinders at idle. At some point with later DI's they went to 1 cylinder idle. I have yet to find clear documentation but was told this by a user on Facebook: "mid year 2002 they changed. The Low Emissions or LE had a different rating". Well I have a used coil I just received so I will see what happens when I install it. I have yet to find a clear answer on the low emissions myself so I’m glad I’m not the only one. I have 2 of these 2001 rxdi skis and the other one fires on both cylinders at idle. Thanks for the link I am going to give it a read.

Ok so the 2001 Seadoo RXDI only has spark on the PTO cylinder and No spark on the Mag side with a new coil installed. I don’t know what to do next. Also new mag coil heats up within minutes so I have to disconnect battery.
